Men's Track & Field Sweeps Weekly Awards for Fifth Time in Seven Weeks

The William & Mary men's track & field team swept the Colonial Athletic Association Athlete of the Week awards for the fifth time in seven weeks this season on Tuesday, the final week that awards are being given.  The Tribe won Field Athlete of the Week all seven weeks this season, and the Track Athlete of the Week in five of the final six weeks.

Competing at the Penn Relays, grad student Preston Richardson (Franktown, Va.) was named the Field Athlete of the Week for the third week in a row, fourth time this season, and fifth time in his career.  Richardson well and truly earned the honor, with a pair of top-five finishes at the world-famous Penn Relays, in which he also improved his lifetime-bests in the shot and discus by a combined five feet, and earned his first school record.  Withstanding heavy winds and rains, Richardson began on Friday by improving his lifetime-best in the discus by three feet, and finished fifth overall at 52.05m (170-9).  That was the 11th-best throw in school history, and improved the fifth-year senior to fifth all-time among Tribe athletes.  Later in the afternoon, he won the shot put on the final throw of the entire competition, putting the shot 18.37m (60-3.25) for the win.  That improved his previous best by two full feet, and broke the school record of 18.35m (60-2.5) that had stood since 2017.  Richardson is the 10th man in W&M history to hold the shot put record, a list that also includes Pro Football Hall-of-Famer Lou Creekmur '49.

In the track events, senior Duncan Goodrich (Richmond, Va.) was named Track Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.  Goodrich finished 10th overall in the 400m dash at the Virginia Grand Prix, running 48.63 seconds.  That was the 10th-fastest time in school history outdoors, and the second-fastest outdoor race of Goodrich's career.  The senior broke the school record indoors this winter at 48.71, and currently ranks sixth all-time at W&M outdoors with his best of 48.53 from the Raleigh Relays in March.  Including the 440y dash, Goodrich is one of only three men ever at W&M to run 48.63 or faster outdoors, alongside former and current record-holders Bill Findler '70 and Steve Boone '83.  Goodrich ranks second in the CAA in the 400m dash this season, and is looking to become W&M's first-ever sprints champion in the 30-year history of the CAA Championships.  The last time W&M won the 400m or 440y conference title of any sort was at the 1972 Southern Conference Indoor Championships.

Richardson, Goodrich, and their William & Mary teammates head to Elon, N.C., this weekend to compete for the CAA Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 3-4.  The Tribe has won the team title five times, most recently in 2013, and has finished second each of the last four years.
