WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After a 10-day hiatus, the William & Mary men's tennis team wraps up the regular season with two matches in three days against Conference USA competition. The Tribe travels to Charlotte on Friday, April 12, at 2 p.m., before welcoming Old Dominion to Williamsburg on Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m.
On Sunday, the Tribe will celebrate Senior Day honoring the pair of
Tristan Bautil and
Michael Ruamthong for their contributions to the program at the
Millie West Tennis Facility. The Green and Gold will also host its Alumni Weekend with events on both Saturday and Sunday. Check out the schedule of event below.
Scouting the Tribe
- In its most recent competition, the Tribe split a pair of matches with Big East foes DePaul and Georgetown. The Green and Gold rallied for a 4-3 win over DePaul on March 30 before suffering a short-handed 4-3 loss to Georgetown on April 2. Due to injuries, W&M played with only five players against the Hoyas.
- The Tribe has won three of its last five matches, including back-to-back wins over George Washington (7-0) and East Carolina (4-1) on March 15 and March 17, respectively.
- Against DePaul, junior
Brenden Volk (No. 2) and freshman
Oren Vasser (No. 4) posted straight-sets singles wins to pull W&M even at two. Sophomores
Chen Ruo (No. 6) and
Finbar Talcott (No. 3) posted three-set wins to clinch the Tribe win. Down a break at 3-2 in the third, Talcott won his final four games to pick up his second clinching victory of the year.
- Talcott posted his second-straight win against the Hoyas. He has won four of his last five matches and owns 12 victories on the year. Talcott is 5-3 at No. 3.
- Along with capturing the doubles point against Georgetown, sophomore
Sebastian Quiros won convincingly at the top singles post. He leads the Tribe with 18 singles wins on the year, including a 3-1 record at the No. 1 position.
- The Tribe has captured the doubles point in five of its last eight contests.
- W&M's top two doubles teams have each won the league's doubles team of the week this season. Volk and Ruo took home the weekly honor on March 6 after posting a top-25 win against Virginia Tech. Senior

- Four of the Tribe's losses this season have come to teams currently in the national top 50, including No. 3 Florida, No. 5 Virginia, No. 35 Penn State and No. 50 Princeton. The Tribe has also played five matches against major conference opponents.
- On Feb. 26, the quartet of freshmen Jack and
Daniel Pellerito and sophomores
Chen Ruo and
Sebastian Quiros joined a W&M-record 164 Provost Awards for the 2018-19 school year. The Provost Awards, now in their 16th year, recognize athletes who have a cumulative GPA of over 3.5 in their careers.
Senior Salute
Sunday will be the final home match in the careers of
Tristan Bautil and
Michael Ruamthong. The pair has led W&M to 42 dual-match wins over the last four seasons. Each of the last two campaigns, the Tribe advanced to the CAA Championship match. In 2018, the Tribe earned its highest national ranking in a decade and finished the year at No. 73. The Green and Gold also knocked off a top-25 foe for the first time since 2007 last season, downing No. 25 South Carolina.
Tristan Bautil (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic)
A four-time CAA Commissioner's Award winner … Selected as an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2017 … Owns 10 career singles wins and 34 career doubles victories … A fixture in the Tribe's doubles lineup during his career, including 12 wins this season … Earned CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors on two occasions in his career, including on Feb. 27 this season.
Michael Ruamthong ( Alexandria, Va.)
Named a CAA Commissioner's Award winner on two occasions … Owns 18 career singles wins and three career doubles victories … Tallied a 10-6 singles ledger this season … Won Singles Flight E at the Spider Invitational during the fall.
Scouting Charlotte
- Charlotte is 8-14 on the year and has dropped seven of their last eight matches. The 49ers host North Carolina A&T at 10 a.m. on Friday, before welcoming the Tribe at 3 p.m.
- Most recently, Charlotte dropped all three matches of the Conference USA Pod, falling to Middle Tennessee (4-2), FAU (4-3) and Old Dominion (4-0) at home.
- The 49ers own a pair of impressive wins this season, downing No. 49 Georgia State on the road and No. 23 Penn at home by 4-3 scores in March.
- In doubles, Luca Keist and Constandinos Christoforou are ranked No. 32 nationally. The pair is 13-9 overall, including a 10-8 mark at the top spot.
- Keist holds down the No. 1 singles post for the 49ers. He leads Charlotte with a 16-13 overall record, including 10 wins at the top spot.
- Ignasi de Rueda owns nine wins at the No. 2 singles position, while Benjamin Wayand ranks second on the team with 15 singles wins, including nine in dual-match play at No. 3 and No. 4.
Series History: W&M vs. Charlotte
- The Tribe holds a 4-0 advantage in the all-time series, including two wins in Charlotte.
- W&M downed the 49ers, 6-1, in Charlotte's first trip to Williamsburg last season.
- The teams meet for the second-straight season after not meeting since 1993.
- The Tribe travels to Charlotte for the first time since 1991 when W&M topped the 49ers, 5-4.
Scouting Old Dominion
- ODU is 11-8 overall on the year and is coming off a 2-1 mark in the C-USA Pod at Charlotte last week. The Monarchs dropped the opener to FAU (4-1) before posting wins over Middle Tennessee (4-1 )and Charlotte (4-0).
- The Monarchs host Drake on Saturday for Senior Day before traveling to Williamsburg.
- In singles, Aziz Kijametovic leads the way, going 18-10 overall and 9-6 at the No. 1 position. He owns five nationally-ranked wins and is currently rated No. 88 in the country.
- Francois Musitelli and Jannik Giesse are both 10-6 in dual-match play at the No. 2 and No. 3 posts, respectively. Musitelli has won four in a row and sits at 17-11 overall, while Giesse owns an 18-12 ledger.
- In doubles, Musitelli and Kijametovic are ranked No. 18 nationally. The duo has won nine in a row, including three-straight against ranked teams, and sits at 21-7 overall and 10-3 at No. 1. They advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Nationals Fall Championships, including a win over the No. 3-ranked team in the country from Texas.
Series History: W&M vs. Old Dominion
- W&M and Old Dominion meet for the 59th time since the 1977 season, making it the Tribe's most-played rivalry over that stretch.
- ODU leads the series 34-24, including a 15-10 mark in Williamsburg.
- Eight of the last 11 meetings between the two schools have been decided by narrow 4-3 margins, including six of the last seven.
- Last season, ODU downed the Tribe 4-3 in Williamsburg.

- The Tribe returns to action when it takes part in the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Championship, April 18-20. The event will be held at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in Elon, N.C., for the fourth-straight year.
- The seeding for the CAA Championship will be released from the conference office early next week.
- The Tribe opens play in the quarterfinals on Thursday, April 18. The CAA Semifinals are set for Friday, April 19, with the championship match on Saturday, April 20.
