WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary flexed its muscle at the top of the singles lineup on the way to a 4-1 victory over American Athletic Conference opponent East Carolina on Sunday afternoon at the
Millie West Tennis Facility. Sophomore
Finbar Talcott put the finishing touches on the Tribe's second-straight victory with an overhand smash to clinch the victory at No. 3 singles.
The Tribe (2-11) secured the doubles point for the second-straight match and fourth time in the last five contests with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 in taking a 1-0 lead over the Pirates (11-4). The trio of sophomore
Sebastian Quiros, junior
Brenden Volk and Talcott won at the top three singles posts to cement a key dual-match win.
How It Happened
- Senior
Tristan Bautil and freshman
Oren Vasser gave W&M the early advantage in doubles action. The duo jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Ronny Georgi and Simon Labbe at No. 2 on the way to a convincing 6-1 triumph. The Tribe pair improved to 4-1 on line two.
- The sophomore tandem of Talcott and Quiros clinched the doubles point with a triumph at No. 3. They broke ECU's Vlad Anghel and Will Bissett in the sixth game and held on for a 6-4 victory. Talcott and Quiros won their second-straight match and upped their ledger to 4-2 at No. 3.
- At No. 2 singles, junior
Brenden Volk rolled to his second-straight victory, increasing the Tribe's lead to 2-0. He dropped just three games in a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win over Wisse Jonker, who entered the match at 11-3 in dual-match action. Volk won for the ninth time this season.
- Playing his second-straight match at the top spot, Quiros ran his win streak to three and extended his team-leading record to 17-12. Trailing ECU's Vlad Anghel by a 3-2 score line in the opening set, Quiros ripped off 10 of the final 11 games in the match to pull out the win. He won the final four to pull out the opening set, 6-3. With the match even at one in the second set, Quiros won five in a row to notch his team-leading sixth dual-match of the season.
- Nearly the same time as ECU recorded its only victory of the day at No. 4, Talcott put the finishing touches on the Tribe's 1-3 singles sweep with a victory on line three over Javier Renones. After the Tribe sophomore won the opening set, 6-2, each player held serve in the second set to head into a tiebreaker. Even a three at the changeover, Talcott won three-straight points to take a 6-3 lead and clinched the Tribe victory with an overhead smash in claiming a 7-5 tiebreaker triumph. Talcott won his 10th match of the season and improved to 3-2 at No. 3, while handing Renones his first dual-match loss of the season as he fell to 10-1.
