W&M Women's Swimming Wins West Virginia Invitational

The William & Mary women's swimming team completed a wire-to-wire championship performance on Saturday night at the West Virginia Invitational, winning the 10-team event with 1,615.5 points.  The Tribe finished more than 200 points ahead of host and runner-up West Virginia, winning the midseason invitational for just the second time in school history and the first time since the 2015-16 season.

1,650 Free
The evening started with the 1,650 free, where junior Megan Bull (Hillsborough , N.J.) won her second championship of the week in 16:50.43.  That was the eighth-fastest race in school history.  Freshman Elizabeth Intihar (Columbus, Ohio) was right behind her in 16:59.63 for second place, and to rank 10th all-time among Tribe athletes in the mile.  Intihar also turned in an impressive 10:19.97 for her 1,000-yard split, ranking 14th all-time at W&M in that event.  Her classmate Grace Tramack (Palo Alto, Calif.) was sixth overall in 17:09.56 to rank 14th among W&M athletes in the 1,650.  Senior Norah Hunt (Stuarts Draft, Va.) finished 10th overall in 17:27.51, and freshman Kim Jogis (Larchmont, N.Y.) swam 17:33.12 for 14th place.

200 Back
In the 200 back, sophomores Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) and Sonora Baker (Mechanicsville, Va.) finished fifth and seventh, respectively, timing 2:02.27 and 2:03.53.  Junior Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) was 12th in 2:02.80, and senior Julia Bland (Sea Girt, N.J.) swam a lifetime-best 2:06.00 for 21st overall.  Sophomore Rebecca Rogers (Richmond, Va.) stopped the clock in 2:10.38, and Tess Ruona (Medford, N.J.) finished 30th overall with a time of 2:12.30.

100 Free
The 100 free saw sophomore Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.) take fourth overall in 51.01 seconds, just a breath ahead of freshman Katie Stevenson (Wilton, Conn.) who took fifth in 51.38.  Sophomore Inez Olszewski (New York, N.Y.) swam 51.95 for eighth overall, and senior Emma Herold (Kohler, Wisc.) touched the wall in 53.65, good for 27th place.

200 Breast
Freshmen took the top three spots for W&M in the 200 breast, led by Peyton Proffitt (Richmond, Va.) who was fourth in 2:20.64.  Annie Tuttle (Alexandria, Va.) was close behind in 2:21.28 for fifth place, and Brooke Lamoureux (Virginia Beach, Va.) was sixth in 2:22.78.  Bull made her second appearance of the night with a seventh-place 2:22.94, and her classmate Diana Tramontano (Greenwich, Conn.) was eighth in 2:23.01.  Sophomore Ellie Henry (Southern Pines, N.C.) finished out the event in 2:25.32 for 13th overall.

200 Fly
The rookie Tramack was the Tribe's top finisher in the 200 fly, swimming 2:05.04 for seventh overall.  She was right in front of her classmate Maura Graff (Henrico, Va.), eighth in 2:05.94, while sophomore Gabby Zhang (Ashburn, Va.) swam 2:05.49 for 10th overall in the consolation heat.  Rogers made her second appearance with a 12th-place 2:05.79, and seniors Yuka Kuwahara (Ashburn, Va.) and Margaret Williams (Williamsburg, Va.) tied for 13th place, each hitting the wall in 2:05.98.  Junior Madeline High (Raleigh, N.C.) swam 2:09.02 and finished 19th, and the senior Hunt finished her week with a 21st-place time of 2:11.01.

400 Free Relay
With the team title already well secured, W&M was able to just go out and swim the 400 free relay with no pressure at all, leading to several more strong performances.  The top relay team of Stevenson, Olszewski, Cundiff, and Bull finished fourth overall in 3:24.68, the 12th-fastest race in school history.  Stevenson's lead-off leg was 51.01, her fastest time in her first semester at W&M, and ranks her 12th all-time among Tribe athletes.  W&M also got a seventh-place finish out of its B team, with the quartet of Williams, Kenna, Baker, and Tiernan combining to time 3:29.26.

William & Mary now has the next month and a half off for exams, holidays, and the winter training trip before the next scheduled dual meet, Saturday, Jan. 11, at Old Dominion.  Several athletes will head to Atlanta, Ga., from Dec. 4-7 for the U.S. Open National Championships, looking to join their five teammates (including Cundiff) who are already qualified for the 2020 Olympic Trials.
