Women's Swimming Dominates Friday Prelims With 37 Qualifiers

The William & Mary women's swimming team continued to impress at the West Virginia Invitational on Friday, advancing 37 of 39 entries to finals in the second prelim session.  Based on projected points and scores from last night, the Tribe opened up its lead on the seven-team field with 930 points, with Villanova second at 792.5 and the host Mountaineers third with 767 points.

100 Fly
The Tribe got right to work in the first event, qualifying nine athletes forward.  Freshman Maura Graff (Henrico, Va.) swam a lifetime-best 56.36 seconds to make the championship finals in eighth place, and she now ranks 15th in school history in the event.  Sophomores Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.) and Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) both got personal-bests as well, swimming 56.53 and 56.82 for 10th and 12th, respectively, and they'll be joined in the consolation finals by Gabby Zhang (Ashburn, Va.), 14th in 57.02, and Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.), 16th in 57.26 seconds.  Senior Yuka Kuwahara (Ashburn, Va.) was 18th in 57.33 and Madeline High (Raleigh, N.C.) was right behind her in 57.42 for 19th to both make the bonus final, where they'll be joined by senior Margaret Williams (Williamsburg, Va.), who was 23rd in 58.00 seconds.  Sophomore Sonora Baker (Mechanicsville, Va.) advanced to the D finals in 27th place, stopping the clock in 58.21 seconds.

400 IM
W&M advanced eight more in the 400 IM, with all eight making one of the top-two finals heats.  Senior Julia Bland (Sea Girt, N.J.) was third overall in 4:24.67, coming in just ahead of Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) who swam 4:24.73 for fourth.  Fifth place went to freshman Grace Tramack (Palo Alto, Calif.) in a lifetime-best 4:26.43, ranking 12th in school history, and her classmate Elizabeth Intihar (Columbus, Ohio) was seventh overall in 4:29.76.  Two more rookies made the consolation finals, with Kim Jogis (Larchmont, N.Y.) timing 4:33.16 for 13th and Peyton Proffitt (Richmond, Va.) 14th in 4:33.66.  Also in the B final is sophomore Rebecca Rogers (Richmond, Va.), 15th in 4:34.29, as well as Zhang, who made the quick turnaround to finish 16th in 4:34.61.

200 Free
Bull was back in a quick turnaround of her own, earning the second seed in the 200 free after swimming 1:50.22.  Sophomore Inez Olszewski (New York, N.Y.) and freshman Katie Stevenson (Wilton, Conn.) also made the championship finals, with Olszewski timing 1:51.62 for sixth place and Stevenson close behind in 1:52.32 for seventh.  The senior Williams was just off her lifetime-best in taking 10th in 1:52.51 and qualifying for the B finals, while Intihar is the top seed in the C finals at 1:54.16.  She'll be joined in the third heat by two seniors, Emma Herold (Kohler, Wisc.) in 1:55.31 for 20th and Norah Hunt (Stuarts Draft, Va.), 22nd in 1:56.10.

100 Breast
Freshman Annie Tuttle (Alexandria, Va.) advanced to the championship finals in the 100 breast, swimming 1:03.72 for third overall in the prelims.  That ranks her ninth all-time at W&M.  Her classmate Brooke Lamoureux (Virginia Beach, Va.) also made the A finals, stopping the clock in 1:04.88 for eighth, while senior Lauren Freeman (Fairfax Station, Va.) earned the top seed in the consolation finals at 1:05.38.  Graff had her second lifetime-best of the day, swimming 1:05.80 for 10th overall, and junior Diana Tramontano (Greenwich, Conn.) took 13th in 1:06.25.  Two more Tribe swimmers will also appear in the consolation finals, with Ellie Henry (Southern Pines, N.C.) time 1:06.39 for 14th and Proffitt 15th in 1:06.68.

100 Back
Even though every swimmer was doubling back from earlier events, the Tribe added six more qualifiers in the final event of the session, the 100 backstroke.  Kenna led the way in 55.68 seconds for third place, and was joined in the championship heat by Baker, who was sixth in 56.64.  Tiernan earned a spot in the consolation finals in 57.90 for 16th overall, and Henry was 22nd overall in 58.37 seconds to make the C finals.  High, in 59.04, and Cundiff, in 1:00.82, are both qualified for the D finals, and sophomore Tess Ruona (Medford, N.J.) has the chance of swimming again as the second alternate, timing 1:02.23 for 34th overall.

The finals of all five events, as well as the 200 medley relay, the 800 free relay, and the 3-meter diving event, begin tonight at 6 p.m.
