W&M News and Notes
- W&M and Hampton meet for the 22nd time in the last 25 seasons with the Tribe holding an 13-8 advantage in the series. The Green and Gold has won two-straight in the series, including a 76-71 win at Hampton last season. The Tribe has won six in a row against HU at home, and senior
Nathan Knight averaged 27.5 points and 13 rebounds over the last two contests against the Pirates.
- Hampton is W&M's second opponent from the Big South Conference this season. The Tribe is 25-17 all-time against the Big South, including an 12-4 mark against Big South teams over the last six years. The Green and Gold won its other Big South game at High Point on Nov. 5 to start the season, 70-56.
- Thanks to its thrilling, last-second win at Wofford, the Tribe leads the country in road wins with three. W&M's three-straight road wins to open a season tied a school record that dates back to 1935-36. Graduate student
Bryce Barnes scored on a driving lay-up with 3.8 seconds remaining on Tuesday night to snap Wofford's 17-game home-court win streak, which was the fourth longest streak in the country.
- The Tribe started the season 3-0 for the 23rd time in the 115-year history of the program and just the third time in the last 25 years. A win over Hampton would give W&M a 4-0 start for just the 10th time in school lore and just the second time in the last 60 years. The Tribe last started 4-0 in 1992-93.
-
Dane Fischer is just the fourth W&M head coach to start his career 3-0 and the first since Richard F. Gallagher in 1946-47. He is the first to win his first three road games. Only two Tribe head coaches have started their careers 4-0, the last being Rube McCray in 1943-44.
- Fischer is one of only four (out of the 58 DI head coaches hired in 2019) to sport a 3-0 record this season along with San Francisco's Todd Golden, Virginia Tech's Mike Young and Ohio's Jeff Boals, as Nov. 13. While Fischer's team has won three road games, the other three have combined for three road games.
- In each of the first three games, senior
Nathan Knight has recorded a double-double, averaging 19.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. He is coming off back-to-back 20-point, 10-rebound double-doubles thanks to 22 points with 10 rebounds at American and 21 points to go with 11 rebounds at Wofford. Knight is the only player in the CAA to rank among the top five in rebounds (2nd) and scoring (4th). He leads the country in double-doubles and his 25 career double-doubles rank seventh among active NCAA DI players.
- Defense has been the Tribe's calling card in 2019-20. W&M is limiting opponents to 38.2% shooting from the floor, including holding High Point to just 31.7%. The Tribe ranks 75th nationally, according to KenPom.com, in effective field goal % defense (43.7) and 39th in the country in 2-point field goal % defense (39.7).
- Senior
Andy Van Vliet has made a significant impact after sitting out last season as a transfer from Wisconsin. The 7-footer ranks seventh in the CAA in both scoring (15.7) and rebounding (8.7). He has demonstrated his versatility with his ability to score inside and outside. Van Vliet tallied his first career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, connecting on 7-of-8 in the paint with a variety of post moves at American. He followed with a career-high 21 points on 5-of-9 from 3-point range at Wofford.
- In the Tribe's win at Wofford, the Green and Gold shot a season-high 56.4% from the field, including 12-of-26 from 3-point range. On the year, W&M ranks second in the CAA in field goal shooting (49.1%) and third in 3-point shooting (38.1%). The Tribe is also 47th nationally in effective field goal % (56.2).
- The Tribe's 16-point comeback at American equaled the program's largest on the road in the last 30 years. Trailing 24-8, the Tribe held AU to 0.77 points per possession (44) over the final 31 minutes. The Eagles shot just 31.4% shooting from the field (16-of-51) and only 4-of-17 from 3 (23.5%) over that stretch.
- Knight's list of preseason accolades continued to grow last week as he was named to the watch lists for both the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award and the Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Year Award, presented by CollegeInsider.com. A two-time Lou Henson All-American as a finalist for the award in both 2018 and 2019, Knight was one of only 40 players in the country to earn a spot on the Lute Olson Watch List. He was one of 50 players to earn a spot on the Lou Henson Award Watch List.
- For the second-straight year, Knight was one of 20 players nationally named to the preseason watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Last season, the 6-10 bigman was selected as one of five finalists for the honor.
- Knight is a name to know nationally. Recently, he was listed on Jay Bilas' top 10 players you should know in college basketball. He was named one of the top 20 bigmen in college basketball by Brian Bennett of The Athletic. Andy Katz of the NCAA March Madness listed Knight as one of the 20 most-exciting players in the country and No. 19 on the list of the top-25 seniors in college basketball. NBC Sports' Rob Dauster (No. 71) and Stadium's Jeff Goodman (No. 86) ranked the Tribe center as one of the top 100 players in the country.
