RICHMOND, Va. – William & Mary men's tennis advanced five players to their respective quarterfinals at the River City Tennis Open on Friday. In total, the Green and Gold posted four singles wins and a trio of doubles victories during the first day of competition.
In Flight A, sophomore
Joseph Brailovsky dropped just four games in a convincing first-round win over JMU's Paul Mendoza, 6-1, 6-3. Mendoza earned All-CAA honors in both singles and doubles during his career. Brailovsky, who improved to 2-1 on the year, faces Wake Forest's Yuval Saloman in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
The Green and Gold earned three of the eight quarterfinal spots in Flight B. Junior
Finbar Talcott and sophomore
Oren Vasser each notched straight-set victories, while senior
Brenden Volk advanced when his opponent defaulted. Vasser won his first match of the season, upending ECU's Agustin Tamganone, 6-4, 6-2, while Talcott notched his team-leading fourth victory, 7-5, 6-4, over George Mason's Eddie Ayers.
Volk meets Old Dominion's Luca Maldoner in the quarterfinals on Saturday, and Vasser takes on Matthew Thompson of Wake Forest. Talcott also drew an ACC opponent in Virginia's Ammar Alhaqbani.
Sophomore
Daniel Pellerito rounded out the Tribe players to advance to the quarterfinals with a come-from-behind three-set win in Flight C. After JMU's Gonzalo Adis won the opening set, 6-3, Pellerito bounced back to take the final two sets, 6-4, 6-2. He improved his team-leading singles mark to 4-1. He squares off with Charlotte's Henry Lieberman in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
In doubles, a trio of Tribe teams split matches. In Flight B, Talcott and freshman
George Davis picked up a tiebreaker win over the Charleston team of Karl Mosterd and Noah Borges, 7-6, in the consolation semifinals.
Pellerito and sophomore
Jack Kelly notched a 6-4 win in the Flight C quarterfinals over the JMU team of Paul Mendoza and Tate Steinhour. In the semifinals, the duo dropped a 6-3 decision to Richmond's Campbell Erwin and Klein Evans. After falling in the quarterfinals of Flight C, junior
Sebastian Quiros and Vasser dropped just two games in a 6-2 win over Guillermo Cagigas and Guilherme Sergio in the consolation semifinals.
The River City Tennis Open continues with two rounds of singles action on Saturday. Action begins at 8:30 a.m., but the W&M maches will not begin before 9:15 a.m. at the Collegiate School.
