The William & Mary men's and women's swim teams head to Davidson this weekend, taking on the Wildcats in the final road meet of the regular season. The dual-meet will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, and can be followed via live results on TribeAthletics.com and the meet mobile app.
Scouting the Tribe Women
W&M's women's team enters the weekend at 3-7 overall, after two tough losses to No. 20 Duke and Division II's top-ranked Queens University last weekend. Sophomore
Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) broke the Tribe's decade-old dual-meet record in the 500 free by swimming 5:00.36, and freshman
Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) added her first dual-meet record at 56.56 in the 100 back. For the season, Bull leads the team with 256.0 points and 12 victories, while Kenna and senior
Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.) each have seven wins.
Scouting the Tribe Men
W&M's men's team also fell to both Duke and No. 2-ranked Queens last weekend, moving their record to 5-4 overall. Like the women, the men scored two dual-meet records in last week's meet, with junior
Chris Balbo (Short Hills, N.J.) breaking his own mark in the 500 free with a 4:33.69, and classmate
Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.) swimming 44.98 to become the first man under 45 seconds in the 100 free in a dual meet. The pair continue to share top honors for W&M on the season, with Balbo leading in wins, 17-13, but Wright scoring more points overall, 241.75-240.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson was swept at home last weekend by UNCW, and also lost to Queens earlier in the season. The Wildcat men enter the weekend at 2-4 overall, while the women are 3-5. On the women's side, Sarah Helen Shepherd is ranked fourth in the Atlantic 10 in the 400 IM, and Isabella McElrath is sixth in both butterflies. For the men, the strength of the Wildcats is in the middle distance and distance freestyle, matching up well with the Tribe. Tacher Scannell, Walt Dauksher, and Crossan Cooper all boast multiple top-five rankings in the Atlantic 10 between the 100 and 1,650 freestyle events.
The Series
- W&M leads Davidson on the women's side 21-2, in a series that dates back to 1993. The last Wildcats win was in 2004, before a current 12-meet winning streak for the Tribe.
- The Tribe men have been swimming against the Wildcats since 1951, and lead the series 35-8-1. W&M has won five in a row and eight of the last nine, after Davidson claimed a 161-127 win at home in the fall of 2011.
