Behind an NCAA-leading performance in the first race of the day, the William & Mary women's track & field team went 2-1 overall Saturday at the Dan Stimson Memorial Quad Meet. The Tribe won 110-80 over George Mason and 109.5-74.5 over Buffalo, before falling to Navy 106-95. The Midshipmen went 3-0 on the day, while the Patriots were 1-2 with a win over the Bulls, who finished 0-3.
- The tone of the day was set from the first race, the 3,000m steeplechase. Grad student
Molly Applegate (Toms River, N.J.) pushed the pace right from the start and ran effectively a solo 10:20.07, the fastest time in the NCAA so far this season. It was a win over all three schools by more than 50 seconds and a lifetime-best by more than three seconds for Applegate, who now ranks second all-time at W&M behind only
Betsy Graney '11 and her school-record 10:15.99. Also in the steeple, sophomore
Julia Montgomery (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) ran a lifetime-best 11:20.31 to improve to 13th all-time in school history.
- Applegate's day wasn't done after that performance, however, as she came back at the end of the day to claim three wins in the 3,000m run as well. She ran an outdoor-best 9:45.39 to qualify for ECACs, and improve to 14th all-time at W&M. Right behind her was fellow grad student
Abigail Motley (Virginia Beach, Va.), who also qualified for ECACs in 9:46.99 in her W&M debut.
- Out in the throwing fields, W&M won eight of 12 possible match-ups. Four of those wins came from senior All-American
Leia Mistowski (Narragansett, R.I.), who swept the hammer throw and also added a win over GMU in the discus. In her signature event, Mistowski threw the hammer 59.65m (195-8), the fifth-longest throw in school history and just behind her effort from last week. Later in the afternoon, she threw the discus for the first time since 2016, and set a lifetime-best by 10 feet to throw 39.61m (129-11). That improved her to 14th all-time among Tribe athletes.
- Sophomore
Sam Moravsky (Sherman, Conn.) likewise stayed undefeated in her home event, winning against all three teams in the javelin with a throw of 40.96m (134-4).
- Freshman
Leah Earnest (Riner, Va.) picked up another win, putting the shot 11.83m (38-9.75) to beat out all competitors from George Mason.
- In the jumping events, senior
Abby Jones (Woodbury, Conn.) swept the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.65m (5-5) for three more wins.
- Junior
Julia McDermott (Potomac, Md.) picked up three wins of her own in the triple jump, winning out with a leap of 11.12m (36-5.75).
- W&M also added another win in the long jump, courtesy of
Brianna Miller (Midlothian, Va.) who jumped 5.37m (17-7.5) to defeat George Mason.
- Back on the track, sophomore
Charlotte Kowalk (Ijamsville, Md.) beat out all three opponents in the 1,500m run, crossing the finish in 4:36.54 for the win.
- Redshirt-freshman
Victoria Gersch (Mercer Island, Wash.) collected three wins of her own, piecing them together out of her two sprinting events. In the 100m dash, she ran 12.41 seconds to beat her competitors from Buffalo. Later in the 200m, she ran 25.44 seconds to again beat the Bulls, and also finish ahead of the sprinters from Navy.
- Redshirt-junior
Maggie Sullivan (Hagerstown, Md.) won a pair of victories, running the 100m hurdles in 14.86 seconds to beat out her competitors from George Mason and Navy.
- Also with two wins was freshman
Taylor D. Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the 800m. She was just nipped at the line by her opponent from Navy, but finished well ahead of both Buffalo and George Mason while crossing the finish in 2:16.32.
- In the 400m hurdles, sophomore
Josie Landis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up a win over Buffalo, clearing the 10 obstacles in 1:05.09.
- W&M also gained wins over the Bulls in both relays. First, the 4x100m team of
Priya Sidhu (Issaquah, Wash.),
Megan Tynan (Monroe, Conn.),
Jadyn Currie (Virginia Beach, Va.), and
Felecia Hayes (Chesapeake, Va.) ran 49.51 seconds. Later, to close out the meet, the Tribe's 4x400m relay of Sullivan,
Susanna Maisto (Silver Spring, Md.), Gersch, and
Lindsay Schott (Portola Valley, Calif.) crossed the finish in 3:57.13.
- Rounding out the notable performances, sophomore
Lauren Graves (Fredericksburg, Va.) cleared an outdoor-best height of 3.40m (11-1.75) in the pole vault. That improved her to a tie for 12th all-time at W&M outdoors.
William & Mary hits the road for the first time next weekend, competing at the Raleigh Relays Thursday-Saturday March 29-31.
