The William & Mary men's track & field team earned five IC4A qualifiers to open the season Saturday at Navy Invitational, and had nine new entries on the Tribe's record lists. W&M scored 106 points to finish third overall out of eight teams at the event, behind only host Navy (210 points) and Georgetown (115 points).
- Redshirt-senior
Preston Richardson (Franktown, Va.) won both of his events on the day, and earned IC4A qualifiers in both. He started the meet with the weight throw, where his win came with a throw of 17.91m (58-9.25). Sophomore
KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.) was third overall with a personal-best throw of 17.45m (57-3), improving to ninth all-time at W&M and also qualifying for the IC4A Championships. Redshirt-freshman
Jason Wright (Huntington Station, N.Y.) was sixth in his first collegiate indoor meet, throwing the weight 16.05m (52-8) to rank 14th in school history.
- Later, Richardson and Cook finished 1-2 in the shot put with two more IC4A qualifiers. Richardson put the shot 17.15m (56-3.25), tied for the 15th-longest put in school history, with Cook close behind with an indoor-best put of 16.49m (54-1.25). That improved him to seventh all-time among Tribe athletes. Senior
Vlad Castillo, Jr. (Belle Mead, N.J.) was fourth at 15.48m (50-9.5), and sophomore
Connor Scott (Mechanicsville, Md.) was fifth with a put of 15.44m (50-8).
- W&M also earned an IC4A-qualifying mark in the 4x400m relay, where the team of
Duncan Goodrich (Richmond, Va.),
Theo Chambers (McLean, Va.),
Skander Ballard (Reston, Va.), and
Connor Atkinson (Ashburn, Va.) combined to take third in 3:18.35. That was the fourth-fastest race ever at W&M indoors, and the fastest relay ever run before February.
- Goodrich led the way in the open 500m dash, taking second in 1:05.23, just .03 off of qualifying for the IC4A Championships. Ballard was third in 1:05.80, ranking him 13th all-time at W&M, and Atkinson was fifth in 1:05.99.
- Chambers, meanwhile, ran the open 400m dash for the first time, and crossed the finish in 50.61 seconds. That ranks him 13th all-time at W&M.
- Sophomore
Michael Fairbanks (Fairfax Station, Va.) tied for the second in the pole vault, clearing an indoor-best and collegiate-best height of 4.70m (15-5). That ranks him 12th all-time among W&M athletes.
- Another silver went to freshman
Ryan Thomas (Leesburg, Va.), who jumped a lifetime-best indoors to finish second at a height of 2.00m (6-6.75). That ranks Thomas 14th all-time at W&M in the high jump indoors.
- Redshirt-freshman
Jack Mackey (Alexandria, Va.) was third overall in his Tribe track debut, finishing the mile in 4:23.39.
- Redshirt-junior
Chris Short (Toano, Va.) also ran a debut of sorts, finishing fifth in his first 3,000m run with a time of 8:59.53.
- Rounding out the notables was redshirt-sophomore
George Cross (Leesburg, Va.), who took fifth in the triple jump with his longest collegiate attempt of 13.38m (43-10.75).
William & Mary has the next several weeks off for exams and holidays, but will return to action on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19, at the VMI Keydet Invitational in Lexington, Va.
