The William & Mary women's swimming team broke a freshman record and won 23 of its 42 races on Friday at the Navy Quad, finishing 1-2 against its opponents in the meet. The host Midshipmen won their meet with the Tribe, 203-91, and Towson was likewise able to take advantage of its diving advantage to win 177-123, while W&M cruised past Division III power Johns Hopkins, 208-54. With the day's results, W&M moves to 1-3 early in the season, and 0-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Among the highlights of the day for W&M was freshman
Ellie Henry (Southern Pines, N.C.), who broke the freshman record in the rare 100 IM with her time of 1:00.01. That race gave Henry wins against both Towson and Hopkins, to go with her earlier win in the 100 breast over the Blue Jays (1:06.04). Sophomore
Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) also had a very good day, earning a team-best five individual wins in the first two individual events. To start things off, Bull came from behind in the final 100 yards of the 1,000 free to win against every opponent in 10:19.89. Then, less than 10 minutes later, she came back to beat both Towson and Johns Hopkins in the 200 free, swimming 1:52.83.
Senior
Annie Miller (Houston, Texas) contributed on eight wins overall for the Tribe, including in the 50 free where she swam 23.70 to win by a quarter second. She also led-off the 200 free relay to wins against all opponents in 1:36.13, joining with
Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.),
Nina Lesser (Centerport, N.Y.), and
Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.) to take the team event. At the beginning of the meet, Sell and Miller swam the final two legs of the 200 medley relay after
Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) and
Lauren Freeman (Fairfax Station, Va.) started things off. The quartet finished in 1:45.38, finishing ahead of both Towson and Johns Hopkins in the race.
Other individual winners included Kenna, who swept the backstroke against Johns Hopkins and won the 100 back in 57.98 and the 200 back in 2:05.94. Freeman and Sell also beat the Blue Jays, in the 200 breast and the 100 fly, respectively. Freeman swam 2:22.56 for her win, and Sell touched the wall in 57.03 seconds. Also against Hopkins, senior
Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.) won the 200 fly in 2:06.31,
Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) won the 100 free in 53.55, and
Norah Hunt (Stuarts Draft, Va.) stopped the clock in 5:06.26 to win the 500 free.
