W&M Swimming Heads to Chesapeake Bay for Four Meets This Weekend

The William & Mary swimming teams head north for four meets this weekend on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.  On Friday night, Oct. 19, the Tribe will compete in a quad meet hosted by Navy and also featuring Towson and Johns Hopkins, starting at 4 p.m.  The next day, W&M will take the short drive down to Baltimore and square off with UMBC at 1 p.m.  The meet on Friday can be followed via live results on Navysports.com.

Scouting the Tribe Men
W&M opened the year with a narrow loss at home to East Carolina last weekend, falling 136-126.  The Tribe swept all of the freestyle events, including the 400 free relay where W&M came within .06 of breaking the pool and dual-meet records in 3:02.59.  Individual winners included junior Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.), who won both the 100 and 200 free, as well as Ian Thompson (Alexandria, Va.), winner of the 50 free, Chris Balbo (Short Hills, N.J.) in the 500 free, and Carter Kale (Williamsburg, Va.) in the 1,000 free.  Wright and Thompson also swam on the winning 400 free relay alongside Eric Grimes (Louisville, Ky.) and Jack Doherty (Middletown, Conn.).

Scouting the Tribe Women
The W&M women's team also came perilously close to beating ECU, falling by an identical score of 136-126 for the closest score in series history since 1986.  Freshman Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) was dominant in the backstroke, winning both the 100 back and the 200 back, and also had the pool's fastest 50 back split while leading the 200 medley relay to victory to open the season.  Sophomore Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) won the 200 free, while Lauren Freeman (Richmond, Va.), Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.), and Annie Miller (Houston, Texas) joined Kenna on the victorious medley relay.

Scouting the Midshipmen
Navy is 2-1 on both the men's and women's sides, with wins over Connecticut and UMBC and losses to LSU.  After the wins over UMBC, Martina Thomas was named the Patriot League Women's Swimmer of the Week, while Bradley Buchter and Hannah Montau each garnered Diver of the Week awards.

Scouting the Tigers
Towson is 1-1 on the women's side, with a win over Georgetown and a loss to James Madison, while the Tiger men also beat the Hoyas to start the year 1-0.  Senior All-American Jack Saunderson won two of his lesser events (the 200 free and 200 IM), while Nick McClure swept the butterflies and Matt Essing the 50 and 100 free.  Will Canny was named the CAA Diver of the Week with a win and a second.  On the women's side, Jacki Schoening swept the backstroke events, Sarah Locke won the 200 fly, and Emily Wilson won the 3-meter dive.

Scouting the Blue Jays
Johns Hopkins is ranking nationally in the top-six on both sides, with the men opening the year 1-1 with a win over Delaware and loss to UMBC, and the women 0-2 with losses in both meets.  For the women, Sydney Okubo swept the backstroke events, while on the men's side, Noah Corbitt (200 free), Max Chen (100 breast), and Collin Hughes (500 free) also won their events.

Scouting the Retrievers
The UMBC men are 2-1 with wins over both Delaware and Johns Hopkins and a loss to Navy last weekend.  Junior Ilia Rattsev won America East Swimmer of the Week honors, after sweeping the 50, 100, and 200 free against the Midshipmen.  On the women's side, the Retrievers are also 2-1 on the year.  Hania Moro was named the America East Women's Swimmer of the Week following the wins over Delaware and Johns Hopkins, thanks to wins in the 200 free, 500 free, and the 1,000 free.

The Series
- The Tribe and Midshipmen women are renewing a rivalry last swum in 1991.  W&M owns a slim 7-6 advantage in the series, with five of those wins coming at Annapolis.
- The series against Towson is tied 11-11, following W&M wins in two of the last three years.  Last season, the meet came down to the final relay in a 135-127 Tribe win in Williamsburg.
- W&M is 8-0 all-time against Johns Hopkins, including wins each of the last two years.
- The Tribe also leads the series against UMBC 5-4, but will be meeting the Retrievers for the first time since 2011.  UMBC won each of the last two meets, and has never lost at home in the series.

- This the first time that W&M and Navy have ever swum a dual meet in men's swimming.
- The Tribe and Towson are two of the best teams in the CAA, and the meet is always close between the two.  W&M leads the series 19-7 and has won three in a row, but the last meet away from Williamsburg was a close 20-point margin and Towson won at home in 2014-15, 150-134.
- Johns Hopkins leads the series with W&M, 3-2, with all three of their wins coming from 1932-34.  The Tribe has been stronger recently, winning each of the last two seasons after reviving the series in 2016.
- W&M has never beaten UMBC, with the Retrievers winning all nine meets between 2000-11.

Notes
- Against East Carolina, sophomore Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) broke the Tribe's dual-meet record in the 1,000 free in 10:10.97.  The previous mark of 10:15.08 by Molly Emery '12 had stood since 2010.

- W&M returns 71.8% of its women's scoring from a year ago, including each of the top-6 points scorers from last year.  On the men's side, the Tribe has 81.4% of its scoring and each of the top-9 back.

- The Tribe has won four of the last five CAA Women's Swimming Rookie of the Year awards, and five of the last seven awards on the men's side.

- Head Coach Matt Crispino '02 is in his 12th season at the helm of alma mater.  Crispino is 65-42 (.607) with the men's team and 82-49 (.626) with the women, for a combined record of 147-91 (.618) and six CAA Team Championships.
