W&M Women Improve to 9-2 with Sweep of FAU, N. Florida

The William & Mary women's swimming team braved the cold January air on Thursday, coming away with a pair of wins including the biggest margin-of-victory in school history.  The Tribe beat host Florida Atlantic 150-55, and downed North Florida 170-35, winning all but two of the 22 races competed in the meet.

The Tribe had nine different women pick up wins in the nine individual events, an impressive show of depth and talent while the team is in the middle of its hardest stretch of in-season training.  After W&M swept the top four places in the 200 medley relay, including a winning 1:48.60 from the team of Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.), Jess Crowley (Acton, Mass.), Abby Mack (Wayne, Pa.), and Annie Miller (Houston, Texas); sophomore Norah Hunt (Stuarts Draft, Va.) finished second overall in the 1,000 free and won out over UNF with a time of 10:40.15.

W&M then went at least 1-2 in each of the next five events, with freshman Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) starting things off with a 1:56.41 win in the 200 free.  Miller won the 50 free, her specialty event, in 24.52 seconds, and senior Emma Merrill (Fairfax, Va.) took the 200 IM in 2:12.14.  Mack claimed the laurel in the 59.12 seconds in the 100 fly, and sophomore Emma Herold (Kohler, Wisc.) completed the stretch by winning the 100 free, stopping the clock in 54.15 seconds.

Next up was the 100 back, where Sell won gold with a modest 1:00.23.  Freshman Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) won the 500 free against North Florida and took third overall in 5:13.50, and Crowley finished out the individual events with a win against both teams in the 100 breast with a time of 1:05.93.  Completing the meet was the 400 free relay, where the team of Bull, Tiernan, Herold, and Sell combined to carry the baton in 3:37.15 and win by over four seconds.

Notes
The Tribe's 170-35 win over North Florida was the biggest-ever margin of victory in a 13-event format ... The previous record margin was 131 points over Georgetown on Feb. 1, 1997 ... W&M improved to 9-2 overall, its best win total since the 2008-09 team went 10-2 ... It is just the ninth time that the Tribe has ever reached nine wins in a season ... Today was believed to be W&M's first outdoor meet in memory ... It was 45 degrees on the pool deck at the start of the meet ... It was also the Tribe's first-ever meeting with FAU, and the second all-time with North Florida.

Up Next
William & Mary finishes out its training trip this week, and will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 13, with a 1 p.m. road meet at Old Dominion.
