W&M Track and Field Adds Barrineau to Coaching Staff

William & Mary Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Alex Heacock '09 announced the hiring of Tommy Barrineau today, to the role of Assistant Coach.  Barrineau will have primary responsibility for coaching W&M's men's and women's sprinters, jumpers, and multi-eventers, while also assisting with all administrative and recruiting aspects of W&M's nationally-recognized program.

"Tommy has a great pedigree in the sport, being the son of a US Olympian," said Heacock. "Further, he trained under Coach Petros Kyprianou during a very successful collegiate career at Georgia, and as a post-collegiate he trained under and worked alongside Coach Shawn Wilbourn with a very accomplished group of student-athletes at Duke. With that kind of coaching pedigree, I know Tommy will help our student-athletes and program continue to improve for years to come, and I am very excited to welcome him to the Tribe."

Barrineau comes to the Tribe after spending the past five years as a volunteer assistant at Duke and 11 years as an athlete, including eight years on the Finnish National Team.  While in Durham, he helped build the Duke track and field teams, coaching three ACC decathlon champions and two ACC men's indoor heptathlon winners.  Barrineau also coached several high school and masters athletes as well.  As an athlete himself, Barrineau represented Finland at the 2011 World University Games, placing 10th in the decathlon, and competed in 52 combined-event meets over his eight-year career.  In 2014, he won the Finnish national title in the decathlon, and in 2015, won the national title indoors in the heptathlon while also finishing eighth in the pole vault.  Barrineau's best score in the decathlon was 7,762 points, set in 2015.

Barrineau competed as a collegiate at the University of Georgia under legendary coach Petros Kyprianou, winning Georgia's first-ever SEC title in the heptathlon in 2010.  He also set and held Georgia's school record in that event for almost his entire career with 5,700 points, which still ranks sixth all-time, and Barrineau also ranks seventh in school history in the decathlon with 7,654 points.  He was also twice named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, and won the team Leadership award in 2010.  In high school, Barrineau was a standout sprinter at Robinson Secondary High School in Virginia, winning the regional title at 500m and taking fifth in the state outdoors at 400m as a senior.  He also helped Robinson to the state title in the 4x800m indoors in 2006 and fourth at Nike Indoor Nationals in the 4x800m in 2005.

A 2012 graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in health promotion and behavior, Barrineau is also certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and holds a USATF Level 1 Coaching Certification.  Also fluent in Finnish (both written and spoken), Barrineau now resides in Williamsburg.
