WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – In a rematch of last season's CAA Championship match, the William & Mary women's tennis team again bounced James Madison, posting the program's 30th consecutive win over the Dukes, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon. The Green and Gold (7-8, 2-1 CAA) won the top two doubles posts to take the initial point of the match from James Madison (9-5, 1-1 CAA), before winning five of the six singles matches. Senior
Marie Faure, junior
Ekaterina Stepanova and sophomore
Lauren Goodman picked up victories in both singles and doubles, while junior
Maria Groener and freshman
Rosie Cheng were strong in triumph outings at the bottom of the Tribe lineup.
In doubles, Stepanova and
Olivia Thaler jumped out to a 4-0 lead at No. 2 on the way to a dominating 6-2 win over Rebecca Harris and Emma Petersen to give W&M the early advantage. The Tribe duo improved to 3-3 at the second spot. Faure and Goodman, who are ranked No. 71 nationally, rallied for a win at the top position to claim the initial point of the match. JMU's Timea Guibe and Kimmy Herrock won the first three games and led 4-2 at one point. Faure and Goodman responded by winning six of the last seven games, including each of the last four, as Faure's volley in a deuce game broke JMU to secure W&M's 6-4 triumph. The Tribe tandem won its sixth-straight match, improving to 10-5 overall and 7-2 at No. 1. The victory was also the 50th doubles win in Faure's career.
Stepanova dominated at the top singles spot to increase the Tribe lead to 2-0. After taking the first set from Guibe, 6-4, the W&M junior won the opening five games of the second on the way to a convincing 6-1 triumph. It was Stepanova's fourth-straight win as she moved to 12-8 overall and 7-4 at the top spot.
Groener and Cheng finished almost simultaneously at the bottom the Green and Gold lineup to clinch the victory over JMU. Groener won for the fifth time in her last six matches and evened her season ledger at 10-10 with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Rebecca Harris at No. 6.
After taking the first set, 6-2, Cheng trailed JMU's Dylan Owen's 5-4 in the second, before winning the final three games to clinch the Tribe's team victory. The Tribe rookie won her fifth straight and pushed her season record to 11-8, while handing Owen's just her second dual-match loss as she dropped to 16-5 on the year.
Faure and Goodman rounded out the Tribe victory with three-set wins at No. 2 and No. 4, both in come-from-behind fashion. After dropping the opening set to Kimmy Herrock, 6-3, at No. 4, Goodman won by a matching 6-3 score in the second. Herrock jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the tiebreaker, but the Tribe sophomore persevered winning nine-straight points on the way to a 10-7 super tiebreaker win. It was Goodman's 10th win of the year.
Faure suffered a 7-5 first-set loss to the Dukes' Emma Petersen, but rallied to win the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). In the third-set super tiebreaker, Petersen led early, 4-2, before Faure won four-straight points to open up a 6-4 advantage. With the breaker even at six during the changeover, the Tribe senior won four-straight points in a row to claim a 10-6 victory. She ran her season ledger to 17-10, while improving to 5-3 at No. 2.
Last season, the Tribe upended the Dukes, 4-1, to secure its 24th CAA Championship. W&M has won 30-straight matches against JMU dating back to 1984. Overall, the Green and Gold holds 42-1 all-time mark against the Dukes.
The Green and Gold returns to action when it hits the road for a pair of matches against Ivy League foes. The Tribe travels to Brown on Saturday, March 25, at 10 a.m., before heading to Harvard on Sunday, March 26, at 11:30 a.m.
