The William & Mary women's track and field wrapped up competition at the Chipotle Marshall Invitational on Saturday, breaking another meet and facility record while winning two events and setting three ECAC qualifiers. Before the meet began, the Tribe was drawn into a double-dual with VMI and the Big 12's West Virginia, and after scoring, the Green and Gold proved undefeated with an 80-63 win over the Keydets and 71-52 victory over the Mountaineers. In fact, when scored (for comparison purposes) against every other team participating in the scoring, the Tribe proved undefeatable.
All-American
Regan Rome (Dallas, Pa.) made her season-debut Saturday, winning the 3,000m handily in an ECAC-qualifying 9:37.12 to break both the meet and facility records. Senior
Molly Applegate (Toms River, N.J.) was next across the line, and also qualified for the ECACs while running 9:51.92. In the 4x400m relay, the Tribe team of
Serena Hooker (Boston, Mass.),
Gabby Runge (Midlothian, Va.),
Susanna Maisto (Silver Spring, Md.), and
Kacey Wheeler (Fairfax, Va.) combined to take third overall in 3:51.37, also qualifying for the ECAC Championships. More notably, that was the second-fastest race ever at W&M, trailing only the 3:51.12 school record set in 2008.
Three of those four sprinters also turned in notable individual performances. In the 200m dash, Runge ran 26.05 for 13th place, a time that is tied for the 10th-best ever at W&M. Stepping up to the open 400m, Maisto ran a personal-best 58.72 to also place 13th, and improve herself to 10th all-time among Tribe athletes. Finally, in the 800m run, Wheeler ran a lifetime-best 2:15.44 for fourth place overall, and improved herself to 14th in school history.
Other notables included the mile run, where sophomore
Deirdre Casey (Princeton Junction, N.J.) ran a lifetime-best 5:00.30 to win the event.
Audrey Gordon (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was fourth overall in 5:03.47. In the high jump, sophomore
Grace Becker (Buckingham, Pa.) once again cleared a personal-best 1.65m (5-5) to place fifth overall, and solidified her rank in a tie for ninth all-time at W&M. Her classmate
Brianna Miller (Midlothian, Va.) took fifth in the triple jump, hitting the sand at 11.35m (37-3).
William & Mary heads down to Winston-Salem, N.C., next Saturday, Feb. 18, for the UCS Invitational. The meet will be held at the JDL Fast Track, which has quickly established itself as one of the fastest facilities in the region.
