The William & Mary women's swimming team out-distanced a game Johns Hopkins squad on Saturday in the season opener, winning 162-100. The Tribe improves to 1-0 to start the year, while the Blue Jays fall to 0-1 overall.
The win is W&M's fifth in a row at home, tied for the third-longest home winning streak in school history. The Tribe won 10 of the 14 events in the meet, including both relays. To start things off, the 200 medley team of
Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.),
Jess Crowley (Acton, Mass.),
Abby Mack (Wayne, Pa.), and
Annie Miller (Houston, Texas) won three of four legs to win in a time of 1:45.73. Then, to finish things off, Miller and Sell swam the middle two legs of the 400 free relay along with
Emma Herold (Kohler, Wisc.) and freshman
Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.), overhauling the Hopkins squad in a long chase to win big in 3:31.15.
Individually, Sell won both of her races, out-racing Hopkins' Anna Wisniewski both times. She won the 100 back in 57 seconds flat, then came back to out-touch Wisniewski in the 100 free, 52.63 to 52.84. Also winning a pair was junior
Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.), who took a break from the distance races to sweep the butterfly events. In the 200 fly, she was well clear of the field, winning in 2:04.74, then took the 100 fly by a full second in 57.75.
Single wins went to both Miller, who took the 50 free in 24.13 seconds, and to Tiernan, winning the 200 back in 2:06.93 in her collegiate debut. Junior
Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.) won the 1,000 free in 10:29.42, and freshman
Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) won one of the most exciting races of the afternoon. In the 500 free, she pulled ahead of Hopkins senior Courtney Cowan in the middle stretches of the race, then rallied to hold off Cowan's late charge and out-touch her at the wall, 5:02.20 to 5:02.39.
