The William & Mary women's swimming team went a strong 2-1 at the ECU Quadrangular on Saturday afternoon, improving to 3-1 overall for the first time in nine years.  The Tribe beat Campbell 203.5-58.5 and Gardner-Webb 178-84, while falling to host East Carolina 141-118.  The Pirates improved their record to 3-1 on the year as well, while the Bulldogs fell to 2-2 overall and the Camels opened the year at 0-3.

Among the top performances for the Tribe was junior Jess Crowley (Acton, Mass.), who broke one of the oldest dual-meet records on the books in the 100 breast.  Crowley touched the wall in 1:04.76, breaking the record of 1:04.91 set by CAA Champion Kelly Reitz '07 in her senior season.  She finished second overall in the race to a Gardner-Webb swimmer, and beat all comers from East Carolina and Campbell for two wins on the afternoon.  Also very impressive was W&M's 200 medley relay, which opened the meet by out-touching ECU for the sweep of all three opponents, 1:46.88 to 1:46.92.  That team included Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.), Annie Valls (Miami, Fla.), Abby Mack (Wayne, Pa.), and Annie Miller (Houston, Texas).  Miller and Sell also swam on the Tribe's 400 free relay, alongside Emma Herold (Kohler, Wisc.) and freshman Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.), touching the wall in 3:31.47 to finish second overall behind only East Carolina.

W&M's top winner individually was the freshman Tiernan, who earned a total of five golds across two events.  She first took second overall in the 200 free at 1:54.61, beating everyone from Gardner-Webb and Campbell, before coming back to win the 200 back in a sweep with a time of 2:07.22.  Not just a sweep of the three first places, Tiernan's performance also led W&M to a sweep of the three podium spots in the event.  The junior Sell won four first-places in addition to her efforts on the Tribe relays, beating both ECU and Campbell in the 100 fly at 57.47 seconds, and winning over Campbell and Gardner-Webb in 58.15 seconds in the 100 back.

Also with four individual wins on the afternoon was another junior, Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.).  She won the 200 fly against G-W and Campbell in 2:05.45, and then came back to beat those two again in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.64.  Other double-winners against the Bulldog and Camels included junior Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.) in the 400 IM, stopping the clock in 4:32.51, and Miller, who went 24.31 in the 50 free.  On the other side of the diving break, Herold picked up her two wins in the 100 free with a time of 52.51 seconds.  Sophomore Julia Bland (Sea Girt, N.J.) finished second overall and picked up two wins in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.76, and her classmate Lauren Freeman (Fairfax Station, Va.) had W&M's final win, taking the 200 breast against Campbell in 2:26.28.

3-1 is the best start to the year for W&M's women's team since 2009-10, en route to a 7-4 record overall ... The last time the Tribe was better than 3-1 in its first four meets was 1988-89, a 4-0 start that went on to end up at 9-2 ... Tiernan, Oceguera, and Sell are all tied for the team lead with six wins on the season so far ... After Crowley's dual-meet record in the 100 breast, there are now just five dual-meet records older than 2010 ... Hall-of-Famer Ruth Anne Miller '03 holds the records in the 200 breast and the 200 IM (both from 2002), while Molly Emery '12 set the 500 free record in 2008 and the rarely-contested 800 free relay was set back in 2003.
