Tribe Women's Swimming Heads to ECU for Quadrangular on Saturday

The William & Mary women's swimming team hits the road for the first time this weekend, heading down to Greenville, N.C. for a Saturday quad-meet.  The Tribe will face off with the host East Carolina Pirates, as well as Gardner-Webb and Campbell, with action beginning at 1 p.m.  The meet can be followed live through the meet mobile app.

The Meet
The teams will contest a mostly-standard 16-event line-up, but will swim the 400 IM to start the individual events instead of the normal 1,000/1,650 free.  Just like last week, the relays will be the 200 medley and the 400 free.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M began the year with a win over Division II powerhouse Johns Hopkins last weekend, winning 164-100.  Juniors Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.) each won a pair of races, with Sell winning the 100 free and 100 back, while Oceguera swept the fly events.  Other wins went to fellow juniors Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.) in the 1,000 free and Annie Miller (Houston, Texas) in the 50 free, as well as to rookies Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) in the 500 free and Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) in the 200 back.

Scouting the Pirates
East Carolina began the year with a 182.5-117.5 setback at Navy.  Julie Lajoie won both the 500 free (5:05.13) and the 200 IM (2:05.91) for the Pirates, who also got wins in the 50 free (Catherine Johnson, 24.0) and both diving events.  ECU will start the meet with up to a 32-point advantage in diving.

Scouting the Bulldogs
Gardner-Webb downed UNC Asheville last weekend in a relay meet, winning five of 10 events for a 202-176 win.  That included a 3:59.40 showing in the 400 medley relay, and 1:39.62 in the 200 free relay.  Last year, the Bulldogs finished third in the CCSA and only graduated one senior off that squad.

Scouting the Camels
Campbell begin the year last weekend with a narrow 159-137 loss at Liberty, winning six individual events and two relays in the meet.  Top swimmers included Sindija Silina, who went 1:54.74 to win the 200 free and Taylor McCinn with a 2:24.06 win in the 200 breast, while Caroline Clark won the 100 fly in 57.47.

The Series
- This will be the first time that W&M and Gardner-Webb have faced off.
- W&M won the only previous meeting with Campbell 211-51 back in 2012, also in a meet at ECU.
- This will be the 40th meeting between ECU and W&M dating back to 1969, with the Pirates holding a 34-5 advantage in the series.  The last Tribe win came in 1988, with the last in Greenville coming back in 1984.  In recent years, the Tribe lost by only 10 points last fall in a meet in Harrisonburg, Va.

Notes
Sell's two wins last week were the ninth and 10th of her career ... Both Smith and Annie Valls (Miami, Fla.) eclipsed the 400 point barrier in their career, with Valls now at 403.0 and Smith at 400.0 exactly ... After the first week of meets, Megan Bull leads the CAA in the 500 free and the 100 breast ... Other league leaders include Smith in the 1,000 free, Sell in the 100 back, Tiernan in the 200 back, Shannon Harrington (Philadelphia, Pa.) in the 200 IM, and the 200 medley relay ... Head Coach Matt Crispino '02 is just five wins away from tying Christina Jackson for the most wins in Tribe women's swimming history ... Jackson won 77 meets in 12 years as head coach between 1969 and 1982 (missing the 1979-80 season), going .662 overall (77-39-1) ... At the start of his 11th year, Crispino is 72-46 overall (.610) with the women's team.
