The William & Mary men's track and field team wrapped up action at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday with four more IC4A qualifications and seven all-time performances. The Tribe scored 62 points total for the weekend, good for fifth place overall in the seven-team meet. Host Penn State took the win over Connecticut, 178-151.
The day's top performance came in the mile, where sophomore
Dawson Connell (Yorktown, Va.) won with a lifetime-best race of 4:03.41. That performance was the 13th-fastest in school history and best since All-American
Ian Fitzgerald '09 took ninth at the 2009 NCAA Championships, and ranks Connell eighth all-time among Tribe athletes. That's also Connell's second IC4A qualifier of the last two weeks, after qualifying in the 1,000m last weekend at George Mason.
W&M also got a lifetime-best and pair of IC4A qualifiers in the shot put. Redshirt-junior
Taylor Frenia (Virginia Beach, Va.) took third overall with a put of 16.76m (55-0), the 10th-best put in school history, while redshirt-freshman
Preston Richardson (Franktown, Va.) set a lifetime-best with a put of 16.29m (53-5.5) for fifth place. That re-qualified him for the IC4A Championships, and improved him to seventh all-time at W&M. In the pole vault, redshirt-junior
Derek O'Connell (Virginia Beach, Va.) was just a centimeter behind his own school record and took third with a height of 5.12m (16-9.5), the second-best performance in school history.
Also of note on Saturday, senior
Jomar Aryee (Hillside, N.J.) finished eighth in the 600m dash with a time of 1:23.53. That's the second-fastest metric performance ever, behind only his own 1:23.45 school record. In the 200m, sophomore
Davion Hutt (King George, Va.) ran the 14th-fastest race ever to cross the line in 22.64 seconds. The 4x400m relay of Aryee,
Ricky Cappetta (Stafford, Va.), freshman
Duncan Goodrich (Richmond, Va.), and
Michael Wilkens (Woodbury, N.Y.) combined to run 3:23.76, the 16th-fastest time in school history.
Next weekend, William & Mary will send a few select athletes out to the Iowa State Classic, while the main portion of the team heads up to Lynchburg, Va., and the Liberty Quad Meet.
