The William & Mary women's swimming team begins its quest for a second-straight Colonial Athletic Association title this weekend, traveling to the nation's capital for a tri-meet Saturday at Georgetown. In addition to the host Hoyas, the Tribe will also compete against the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins, with action starting at 1 p.m.
Scouting the Tribe
W&M returns seven women with CAA Championship experience this year, including seniors
Jaimie Miller (Houston, Texas) and
Sophie Rittenhouse (London, England) who each have six career gold medals. Last winter, Miller won both the 50 and 100 free as well as the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay, while Rittenhouse swept the backstrokes and also swam on both championship medley relays.
Also returning is junior
Annie Valls (Miami, Fla.), who has won three championships over her first two season on the Tribe's medley relays, as well as classmate
Abby Mack (Wayne, Pa.), the 2015 CAA Rookie of the Year. Junior
Jess Crowley (Acton, Mass.) was part of the gold-medal 200 free relay last year, and sophomore
Annie Miller (Houston, Texas) won gold on both the 200 free and the 200 medley relays. Rounding out the returning champions is sophomore
Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.), who was named the 2016 CAA Rookie of the Year after becoming the first W&M winner of the 1650 free since 1986.
Scouting the Hoyas
Georgetown comes into the season off a runner-up showing at the 2015 Big East Championships, and swept St. Franics and Delaware last weekend in its season-opener. Junior Molly Fitzpatrick is the team's leader in the breaststrokes, and is the reigning Big East champion in the 200 breast.
Scouting the Blue Jays
Johns Hopkins finished fifth in the NCAA Division III Championships last season, and returns several multiple-time All-Americans. That roster includes Anna Wisniewski, who was the national runner-up in the 100 fly, as well as Gwynnie LaMastra and Kaitlin Jones, who each earned seven All-Americans last year in the breast/IM events and relays.
The Series
- This is just the seventh time that W&M and Johns Hopkins have met in an official dual meet, and the first time since the 1982-83 season. The Tribe is 6-0 in the series.
- The series against Georgetown is a bit more mature, with W&M holding a 17-1 advantage all-time. The Hoyas won the very first match-up 134-132 in January of 1987, while last year's meeting went to the Tribe, 152-53.
