The William & Mary women's swimming team began the year with a bang on Saturday, sweeping a tri-meet on the road against Georgetown and Johns Hopkins. The Tribe beat the host Hoyas 157-105, and sprinted past the Blue Jays 196-66. That opens the year 2-0 for W&M, while Georgetown fell to 3-1 and Hopkins 0-2.
Leading the way for W&M, with four wins in her two individual events (sweeping both schools) as well as a spot on both winning relays, was sophomore
Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.). She began the day teaming with
Annie Valls (Miami, Fla.),
Georgie Crompton (Brooklandville, Md.), and
Jaimie Miller (Houston, Texas) to break the pool record in the 200 medley relay at 1:46.09, and then followed up with a win in the 100 back at 57.65. Sell also swept the 100 free, touching the wall in 52.37 seconds, and finished off the day and the meet with a 3:32.88 win in the 400 free relay, alongside Crompton, Miller, and freshman
Emma Herold (Kohler, Wisc.).
Also picking up victories in individual events were Valls, sweeping the 100 breast in 1:06.14, and Miller, who won the 50 free against all comers with a time of 23.82 seconds. Sophomore
Maria Oceguera (New Rochelle, N.Y.) won three individual races, including a sweep of the 200 fly in 2:04.83. She also swam 5:05.94 in the 500 free to place second overall, and ahead of all swimmers from Johns Hopkins. Four more swimmers earn wins over the Blue Jays while finishing second overall. In the 1000 free, sophomore
Morgan Smith (Verona, N.J.) touched the wall in 10:25.69, and in the 200 back, senior
Sophie Rittenhouse (London, England) pulled the feat in 2:06.50. Junior
Shannon Harrington (Philadelphia, Pa.) won the 200 breast in 2:23.72, and classmate
Jess Crowley (Acton, Mass.) rounded out the winners with a 58.75 showing in the 100 fly.
William & Mary is back in the pool Oct. 21-22, heading to Christiansburg, Va., for a quad meet hosted by Virginia Tech. In addition to the Hokies, the Tribe will face off with West Virginia and Duke.
