The William & Mary women's swimming team put up a tough effort Saturday, coming up just short against nationally-regarded squads from East Carolina and South Carolina. The Tribe finished the regular season at 6-5 overall, its third winning season in a row and 11th in the last 12 years.
Leading the way as she has all year long was senior
Jessie Ustjanauskas (West Hartford, N.J.), who shattered a dual-meet record for the third week in a row. She swam 2:03.10 in the 200 fly to smash her own mark from two weeks ago by 0.43 seconds, finishing second to both ECU and USC in the event. She came back later on to sweep the 100 fly, stopping the clock in 56.13 seconds. Ustjanauskas also swam on both of the Tribe's top relays, defeating the Gamecocks in both the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay. In the medley, she joined with
Katie Sell (Fredericksburg, Va.),
Annie Valls (Miami, Fla.), and
Jaimie Miller (Houston, Texas) to touch the wall in 1:46.40. The free relay swapped out Valls for
Jess Crowley (Acton, Mass.) and a time of 3:30.39.
Other performances of note included the 200 backstroke, where junior
Sophie Rittenhouse (London, England) swept all opponents in 2:02.80. Miller added an individual win against USC in the 100 free in 51.89, just after her younger sister
Annie Miller (Houston, Texas) beat USC in the 50 free with a time of 24.19 seconds.
With the dual-meet portion of the season now complete, William & Mary turns its attention to post-season invitationals. First up is the Carolina College Invitational, scheduled for next Friday-Sunday (Feb. 5-7) in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Tribe will be sending a small crew to the meet, which functions as season-ending meet for those athletes not selected to the CAA Championships squad.
