WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The No. 30-ranked William and Mary women's tennis team won in fifth straight match in sweeping Navy, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Tribe improved to 10-2 on the year, while the Mids fell to 8-6.
The Green and Gold dropped just five total games in doubles, winning at all three spots. The rookie tandem of
Olivia Thaler and
Maria Groener posted a 6-1 victory over Kristine Rojo and Noelle Kaufmann to start pairs competition, improving to 3-1 at No. 2 and 9-2 in duals.
The reigning CAA Doubles Team of the Week, senior
Jeltje Loomans and junior
Leeza Nemchinov clinched the initial point of the day at the No. 1 position. The No. 48-ranked pair in the country upended Summer Ralston and Claudia Mackenzie, 6-2, to push their ledger to 15-3 on the year. Sophomore
Mélanie Roy and junior
Julia Casselbury rounded out the sweep with their fourth win, bouncing Logan Antill and Amanda Keller, 6-2, at No. 3.
Roy and Groener wasted little time posting singles victories at No. 4 and No. 5. Roy dropped just one game in rolling to her third straight win, a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Keller. It was her 10th win on the year as she improved to 3-0 at No. 4. Groener picked up an unblemished triumph, 6-0, 6-0, over Audrey Channell at No. 5. She ran her win streak to four match, while upping her season ledger to 16-7.
Loomans clinched the team triumph, winning her fifth consecutive match at No. 2. The Tribe senior dropped just a game in each set, routing Antill, 6-1, 6-1. She jumped her season ledger to 17-4 overall and 9-2 at No. 2.
Thaler continued her winning ways at No. 3, improving to 4-1 at the spot. She turned in a dominating first-set tiebreaker performance without dropping a point, 7-6 (0), before carrying the momentum over to a 6-1 second-set triumph over Katie Porter. Thaler pushed her singles record to 14-9 overall.
Ranked No. 44 nationally in singles, Nemchinov remained perfect in dual-match play with her 12th straight victory. The Tribe junior downed Navy's Sam Droop, 6-1, 7-6 (7), to improve to 19-2 on the year. She is 11-0 at No. 1 singles during the dual-match portion of the schedule.
Freshman
Cecily Wuenscher rallied from a set deficit in posting her fifth straight win to round out the sweep. After dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4) to Kristin Rojo, the Green and Gold rookie answered with a 7-5 win in the second set. With the team result already decided, Wuenscher outlasted Rojo in the third-set super tiebreaker, 10-8. She improved to 11-8 overall with her sixth win at No. 6 this season.
After two weeks away from action, the Tribe treks to Houston, Texas for a pair of matches, March 21-22. The Green and Gold faces Ivy League foe Yale for the fourth time in the last five years on Saturday, March 21, at 11 a.m. On Sunday, March 22, the Tribe meets No. 64 Rice for the third straight year at 11 a.m.
