Baseball Falls in Season Lid-Lifter at Ole Miss 9-4

OXFORD, Miss. – Junior Ryan Hissey drove in three runs, including a solo home run, but the William and Mary baseball team fell at Ole Miss 9-4 on Friday afternoon in the lid-lifter for both teams. With the result the Tribe falls to 0-1, while the Rebels improve to 1-0.

In the setback, W&M out hit Ole Miss by a count of 10-7, Hissey led three players who recorded multi-hit games, including freshman Cullen Large and junior Charley Gould, who had the Tribe's other RBI.

W&M took the lead in the top of the second inning. Hissey led off the frame with a laser shot over the right field wall. Hissey's first round-tripper of the year gave the Tribe an early 1-0 lead.

The Rebels responded with four runs, all unearned, in the bottom of the second inning. Henri Lartigue led off the inning by reaching second on a throwing error, advancing to the third on a groundout. Austin Knight followed by reaching on an error, tying the score. The next better, Kyle Watson doubled to right center, putting runners on second and third. Cameron Dishion laid down a successful squeeze bunt to give the Rebels their first lead. J.B. Woodman followed suit with a single, bringing in Watson. The final run of the inning came in on a sacrifice fly from Errol Robinson, giving Ole Miss a 4-1 lead.

The Tribe just a missed a chance to add some runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to strong Ole Miss defense. Gould led off the inning with a single moving to third on a double by sophomore Tim Hoehn. The next batter, freshman Ryan Hall reached on a catcher's interference, loading the bases. After a strike out the Rebels were able to turn a double play on a line drive to Robinson.

Ole Miss tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Knight led off the inning with a single through the left side, moving to second on a walk to Watson. A sacrifice bunt from Dishion put runners on second and third with an out. Woodman followed with a sac fly to right to lift the Rebs to a 5-1 lead.

The Green and Gold responded with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Large reached on a one-out error, moving to third on a double from senior Willie Shaw. Hissey, continued his strong day, with a double into right field clearing the bases. The rally continued as Gould followed suit with a double to center field, scoring Hissey.  

Ole Miss added four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Lartigue walked to start the inning, moving to second on a walk to Tate Blackman. A sacrifice bunt by Knight moved the runners to second and third. Watson doubled to center field clearing the bases. Dishon was hit by a pitch and Woodman walked, loading the bases. Robinson followed by getting hit by a pitch, scoring run. The fourth run of the inning came around on a wild pitch. 

Senior Jason Inghram, who made the start for the Green and Gold, tossed six innings, allowing six hits, and five runs (one earned) in the loss.  Christian Trent picked up his first win of the season for the Rebels tossing five innings, scattering six hits, and allowing one earned run.

Woodman led Ole Miss going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Watson was the only other Rebel with multiple hits, while Robinson also drove in a pair of runs.

The College and Ole Miss conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 14. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. EST. W&M opens a 15-game home stand, the longest home stand in school history, on Tuesday, Feb. 17 against VMI. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
