Tribe Falls to Charleston in Series Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — William & Mary dropped its series opener to Charleston on Friday by a 9-2 final.

W&M (21-30, 12-16 CAA) was held to five hits in the loss. Witt Scafidi went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.

The Cougars (26-26, 16-12) did most of their damage in the third when they plated six runs. Jack Weight came on in relief and pitched 5 ⅓ innings, holding Charleston scoreless from the fourth through the seventh while tallying four strikeouts.

The Tribe got on the board in the fifth when Anthony Greco scored on a wild pitch after hitting a leadoff triple. In the eighth, Scafidi added an RBI single to score Louie Bartletti.

Charleston responded with a three-spot in the eighth and would hold serve from there, shutting out the Tribe in the ninth.

Carter Harrington got the win for Charleston. Charlie Richwine was charged with the loss for the Tribe.
