Volleyball's Final Road Trip Heads to UNCW, Charleston this Weekend

The William & Mary volleyball team hits the road for the final team this season with two matches this weekend.  The Tribe plays at UNCW on Friday night at 7 p.m., before continuing on to the College of Charleston Saturday night also at 7 p.m.  With four games left in the Colonial Athletic Association schedule, W&M is in seventh overall, just one game behind Delaware for the sixth and final CAA Tournament spot (the Tribe swept the Blue Hens this season).

Scouting the Tribe
W&M is 9-16 on the year and 3-9 in the conference after beating Delaware 3-1 on the road last Sunday.  Senior Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.) leads the way offensively with 2.62 kills per set, while sophomore Sydney Biniak (Elkridge, Md.) and freshman Heather Pippus (Lake Oswego, Ore.) are also over the 2.0 mark with 2.30 kills and 2.08 kills per set, respectively.  On defense, senior Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Paige Humphrey (Oak Hill, Va.) are averaging 0.87 and 0.80 blocks per set, respectively, while sophomore Sara Zumbach (Franklin, Tenn.) has 3.79 digs per set.  All three of the Tribe's setters are dishing out 4.20 assists per set or better, led by freshman Katie Kemp (Brentwood, Tenn.) with 5.0 helpers per set.

Scouting the Seahawks
UNCW is 18-6 overall and 9-3 in the CAA, currently third in the standings and guaranteed of a tournament berth.  The Seahawks are being led by Nicole Lott offensively with 3.55 kills per set, while on the other side of the net Anna Moss (1.52 blocks per set) and Meredith Peacock (1.36 blocks per set) are twin towers.  Lindsay Hartmann is also strong defensively, with 4.07 digs per set.

Scouting the Cougars
Charleston enters the weekend at 14-12 on the year and 6-6 in league play, currently fifth in the standings after sweeping league-leader JMU on the road last weekend.  Melissa Morello is outstanding on the attack with 3.99 kills per set, while Britney Vallez sweeps the floor for 4.46 digs per set.  Kayla Tronick is the top blocker, with 1.01 stops per set.

The Series
- W&M has a commanding 49-9 advantage all-time against UNCW, but is looking for its first win over the Seahawks since 2013.
- The Tribe is also due for a win against the Cougars, trailing 0-6 all-time.

News and Notes
- W&M's two wins over Delaware this season is the first season-sweep over the Blue Hens since 2005.

- Albright became just the fourth player in school history with 400 career blocks in the match at Towson, completing her march with two solo blocks and one block assist.  She joins Beth Ann Hull '89, Anna Agbe-Davies '93, and Caitlin Geraghty '06 as the only Tribe players to ever surpass 400 blocks, and needs just five more to pass Hull (409) for third all-time.

- Pippus was named the CAA Rookie of the Week on Oct. 20, after leading the Tribe to a 1-1 record against Delaware and Elon.  She averaged 3.71 kills and 0.71 aces per set on the week against the two CAA foes.  Against Elon, she had 19 kills, nine digs, and two aces, the most kills for a Tribe freshman since 2011.

- Against JMU at home, Koleva became the third player in school history with 1,000+ kills and 1,000+ digs in her career, joining Hall-of-Famers Heidi Erpelding '89 and Jennifer Torns '92 as the only players in school history with the "double-quadruple."  Koleva is also just the ninth player ever to surpass 1,000 kills, and the first since Erin Skipper '11.

- Koleva was named to the all-tournament team at the AU Eagle Invitational, her third all-tournament honor in four events this season.

- At the ECU Pirate Invitational, both Koleva and Pippus earned all-tournament honors.

- Mallory Brickerd (Ashburn, Va.) was named to the all-tournament team at Army, after leading W&M in kills, aces, and points on the weekend.

- Over the weekend at Army, Koleva became the eighth player in school history with 1,000+ digs in her career.

- After the season opening victory at the Tribe Invitational, W&M has now won five of its last eight home tournaments.

- Zumbach was named the MVP of the Tribe Invitational, while Koleva and Albright also joined her on the all-tournament team.

- W&M leads the CAA in returning all-conference players with three; Koleva, Michelle Heath (Rustburg, Va.), and Zumbach.

- Coach Shelton is just four wins away from 100 at W&M.  She was also the head coach at Virginia for 13 years, amassing 235 wins there.
