Box Score The William & Mary volleyball team returned home on Friday night to take on Towson, but despite a strong effort couldn't take the stripes off the Tigers before falling, 3-1. The Tribe moves to 7-9 overall and 1-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while Towson improved to 15-2 (2-1 CAA).
Notable performances for the Tribe included junior
Kristen Larrick (Bethesda, Md.), who hit .467 with seven kills and no errors, and also had a team-best six blocks on the night. Three of those blocks were solo efforts, tied for the 16th-best single-match effort in school history. Her fellow middle, senior
Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.), hit .381 with a team-best 10 kills, and also had three blocks to come within 24 of 400 in her career. Redshirt-junior
Michelle Heath (Rustburg, Va.) also had 10 kills, pairing them with seven digs, an ace, and a block.
Senior
Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.) also inched closer to a major milestone, picking up nine kills and 15 digs, and is now just 16 kills away from 1,000 in her career. Junior
Gabrielle Pe (Virginia Beach, Va.) made a double-double with 14 assists and 12 digs, while
Katie Kemp (Brentwood, Tenn.) had 14 assists and an ace, and
Austyn Ames (Wichita, Kan.) added nine more assists. Sophomore
Sydney Biniak (Elkridge, Md.) rounded out the notables with seven kills and a pair of blocks.
The Tribe won the third set, jumping out in front early and getting out as far as six points twice, both times coming on aces first by Heath and then by Kemp. Towson fought back to tie things late at 23-23, and then gained the next point as well to threaten to end the match then and there. W&M fought off two match-points with kills from Biniak and Koleva, then fended off a third point and struck quickly to take the advantage at 27-26. It was Towson's turn to play defense, doing so once, before a Tigers error and a kill from Kemp won the set 29-27.
William & Mary is back in action on Sunday afternoon, hosting James Madison at 2 p.m. in Kaplan Arena.
