WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –The William and Mary women's soccer team shutout the Colonial Athletic Association's highest scoring offense, claiming a 4-0 victory over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium. Sophomore Clara Logsdon, junior Samantha Cordum and seniors Anna Madden and Emory Camper all recorded goals for the College. With the win, the Tribe improves to 7-2-1, 1-1-0 in CAA action, while the Pride falls to 6-5-0, 1-1-0 in league action.
The Tribe had the opening chance of the match in the fifth minute. Cordum chased down a through ball into the box. Her shot was on frame, but was kicked away by Hofstra goalkeeper Friederike Mehring. W&M kept up its pressure with a pair of shots from Madden in the ninth and 10th minute, but neither of them came on target.
Hofstra's best chance of the period came in the 24th minute. Amber Stobbs fired a shot from distance on target, but junior goalkeeper Caroline Casey sniffed it out.
Logsdon, who was making her first appearance of the season, fired a shot that was blocked out bounds for a Tribe corner kick. On the ensuing corner kick, junior Nicole Baxter sent a ball in that bounced freely in front of the goalmouth. Waiting for it was Logsdon, who placed her shot perfectly into the upper left corner of the goal. Her first of the season, gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
W&M had a pair of chances to extend its lead to 2-0 in the opening moments of the second stanza. The first came on a shot from Cordum, but Mehring made the stop. The next came on a service from junior Leci Irvin, who found classmate Barbara Platenberg. Platenberg's header was just inches wide of the goal.
The Tribe was successful on extending its lead with a marker in the 64th minute. Baxter again started the rally this time with a long ball that found Cordum. Cordum brought the ball down and launched the ball into the goal from 25 yards out. The Boise, Idaho native's team-high sixth goal of the season lifted the Green and Gold to a 2-0 advantage.
Just three minutes later, the Tribe added another tally. Cordum had space as she was charging the box, but this time dished a pass over to Madden. Madden lofted her shot just over the goalkeeper from eight yards out. The senior's second goal of the season gave the Tribe a 3-0 lead.
The Tribe added the exclamation point in the 84th minute of the match. Freshman Adrienne Maday sent a long ball over the Pride defense that found Camper. Camper fired a rocket into the left side netting, which gave the Green and Gold a 4-0 lead. The assist for Maday was the first of her Tribe career.
Casey, freshman goalkeeper Samantha Johnson, and the Tribe defense limited the league's highest scoring offense to just seven shots on the day. Casey turned away the only two shots that came on target. Johnson and Casey combined for the Tribe's fourth shutout of the season.
W&M controlled the ball in their offensive third for a majority of the match, outshooting the Pride 20-7. W&M also had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Cordum fired a match-high six shots with three on goal for W&M
