DAVIDSON, N.C. – The William and Mary women's soccer team pushed its winning streak to four games with a dominating road win at Davidson on Thursday night. Senior Emory Camper and junior Samantha Cordum each tallied for the Green and Gold. With the result, the Tribe is now unbeaten in its last five matches and has a 5-1-1 record, while Davidson falls to 3-5-1.
Davidson fired the first two shot of the match, but after that it was all Tribe in the for the remainder of the match. W&M was able to get on the board with a tally in the 34th minute. Freshman Elysse Branton sent a cross into the middle of the box that found Camper. Camper was able to redirect it into the left side of goal. The senior's second goal of the season, put the Tribe up 1-0. Branton's assist was the first point of her W&M career.
The Tribe continued its pressure opening the second stanza. Cordum raced down the field and put a shot on target moments into the half, that was turned away by Davidson's goalkeeper Rachel Locke. On the ensuing corner kick, the Wildcats were able to clear and keep the deficit at one.
W&M doubled its lead with a tally in the 52nd minute. Freshman Rachel Moore sent a pass to Cordum in the box. Cordum rocketed a shot to the far post that found the back of the net. The Boise, Idaho native's third marker of the season gave the Tribe a 2-0 lead.
The Green and Gold continued its onslaught after its second goal. Moments after her goal, Cordum put another shot on target that was turned away. In the 61st minute off of a corner kick, freshman Sami Grasso was able to get a shot on target. However, a Davidson defender was there to clear it off of the goal line for a team save.
Junior goalkeeper Caroline Casey registered her second straight shutout and her third of the season. She faced just three shots and didn't have to record a save in her fifth victory of 2014. The Chesapeake, Virginia native moved her scoreless streak 205 minutes. It was her 16th career shutout, which puts her just six away from entering the top five in school history in career shutouts.
The College dominated almost every statistically category in the match. They outshot Davidson 20-3, including a 10-0 advantage in shots on goal. That also includes W&M outshooting the Wildcats 20-1 in the final 85 minutes of the match. The Green and Gold also had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Cordum led the way for the Tribe with six shots, including five on goal, while Grasso fired four shots, three on frame.
William & Mary's offense has come alive since being shutout by Maryland on Aug. 28. The Tribe has scored multiple goals in every game since, and also outshot their opponents in every match since.
The Green and Gold opens its second of three, three-match home stands at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field with its non-conference finale against Princeton on Sunday, Sept. 21. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. The Tribe also opens Colonial Athletic Association play during the home stand with matches against Northeastern (Sept. 25) and Hofstra (Sept. 27).
