Summer Honors Roll in for Tribe Men's Golf

The William and Mary men's golf team may not be in Williamsburg at the moment, but that hasn't stopped them from racking up wins and honors this summer.  In the past week, Tribe athletes have won a major city championship, and been recognized for the accomplishments of the past year.

Out in Bremerton, Wash., rising senior Charlie Kern (Seattle, Wash.) won the 30th City Amateur with a wire-to-wire lead last week.  Playing at Gold Mountain GC, Kern shot a 66 (-5) to lead after the first day, and had a 1-under 71 on the event's second course.  That advanced him to a play-off, where he continued his steady play to record par and win the title on the first hole over UNLV's Carl Johnson (bogey).  Kern was the Tribe's second-ranked golfer this past year, averaging 73.9 strokes per round, and led the team with a seventh-place finish at the CAA Championships.

Also last week, rising senior Alex Hicks (Cape May Court House, N.J.) was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors' All-State second team.  This is the second year in a row that Hicks has earned all-state honors, after leading W&M with a 72.81 average in 2013-14.  That was the second-best single season in school history, and earned Hicks a spot on the All-CAA first team.  His best performance of the year came at the Joe Agee Invitational, where Hicks picked up both his first collegiate tournament win and his first hole-in-one.  During the three-day event, he shot W&M school records of 10-under for 36 holes and 14-under for 54 holes, and became the first Tribe golfer to ever collect a total score under 200 (199).  This summer, Hicks advanced to sectional qualifying for the U.S. Open.
