William and Mary junior
Alex Hicks (Cape May Court House, N.J.) was named one of the Colonial Athletic Association's top male golfers for the second year in a row Wednesday, with the release of the league's all-conference teams. The post-season awards are selected by a vote of the CAA coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Hicks was named to the All-CAA first-team once again, becoming just the second player in school history to earn first-team all-league honors in back-to-back seasons. He recorded the second-best season in school history with a 72.81 stroke average, and shot par or better in 10 of his 26 rounds. Hicks' best tournament came at the Tribe's own Joe Agee Invitational, where the junior shot a school-record 199 (-14) for the tournament title. That week also included a best-ever 36-hole score of 10-under (132), and the first hole-in-one for a W&M man since 1997 (and only fourth ever). Hicks was named the CAA Golfer of the Week for that achievement, and was also the league's top golfer following the season's first tournament in early September. Through three years of his career, Hicks ranks second all-time in school history with a 74.14 average, and 10th all-time with a .712 winning percentage (1713-693). In other categories, he ranks seventh all-time with 20 rounds of par or better, 11th in top-five finishes with five, and 15th in total victories at 1,713.
Hicks' summer has already begun, when he posted the top score at his local U.S. Open qualifier earlier this week. He'll move on to sectional qualifying on June 2, which will take place at one of 10 sites around the country. A strong showing there over the 36-hole event would make Hicks the first man in school history to qualify for the U.S. Open while still enrolled.
