Women's Swimming Has 11 Qualifiers on Final Morning of CAA Championships

The William and Mary women's swimming team advanced 11 of 16 swimmers to the finals Saturday morning at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, the final day of the meet.  Six of those qualifiers went through to the championship heat, including a record-breaking performance and a swim-off winner.  In the team race, defending champion Towson extended its lead to 684-565 over James Madison, while the Tribe did some extending of its own in third place with 373 points, 33.5 ahead of UNCW.

200 Back
In the first event of the morning, the 200 back, junior Liz Glenn (Greenwood Village, Colo.) earned the number one seed with her school-record time of 1:57.62.  She is the first athlete under 1:58 for the Tribe, and provisionally-qualified for the NCAA Championships.  Freshman Sophie Rittenhouse (London, England) clocked 2:00.53 for eighth place and a spot in the A final as well, while sophomore Noelle Klockner (Marlboro, N.J.) was right behind her in 2:00.61 for ninth place and the top billing in the consolation finals.  Klockner improved to third all-time at W&M with the race, ranking behind only Glenn and Rittenhouse.  Freshman Jess Russell (Brunswick, Maine) gave the Tribe its second consolation finalist with her 10th-place 2:01.14, lifting her into fifth all-time in school history.

100 Free
In the 100 free, junior Megan Howard (McLean, Va.) had the morning's second-fastest time at 50.17, and freshman Jaimie Miller (Houston, Texas) is the fourth seed after dipping below the 51-second barrier in 50.67.  Sophomore Sara Schad (North Yarmouth, Maine) swam a lifetime-best 51.03 in her heat, tying for eighth place and causing a swim-off later to determine who would go to the A final.  The super sophomore proved more than up to the task, marking her second lifetime-best effort of the morning to win the swim-off in 50.55 seconds and advance to the championship heat with her two teammates.  Schad now ranks third all-time in school history, just ahead of Miller in fourth.

200 Breast
Next up was the 200 breast, where W&M picked up two more consolation finalists.  Sophomore Jenny Lomicka (Henrico, Va.) stopped the clock in a lifetime-best 2:20.21, improving to a tie for ninth-place in school history, and freshman Allie Christy (Williamsburg, Va.) was right behind her in 2:21.82, 17th-fastest ever for the Tribe.

200 Fly
The last event of the morning was the 200 fly, where sophomore Jessie Ustjanauskas (West Hartford, Conn.) swam her second-fastest race ever, fifth all-time in school history, and advanced to the championship finals in 2:02.12.

This afternoon, the finals of 1,650 free begin at 3:30 p.m., with the evening session and the finals of all events and the 400 free relay beginning at 6 p.m.
