The William and Mary women's swimming team broke four all-time records Friday night in a 156-106 loss to visiting Duke, including a pool record and a dual-meet mark in addition to a pair of rarely-contested school records. The Tribe is now 4-3 on the year with the loss, while the Blue Devils improved to 3-1 overall.
Complete ResultsThe records began falling right from the very start, as the Tribe's 200 medley relay team of
Noelle Klockner (Marlboro, N.J.),
Annie Valls (Miami, Fla.),
Jessie Ustjanauskas (West Hartford, Conn.), and
Megan Howard (McLean, Va.) swam a quick 1:44.22 for the win. It smashed not only the pool record of 1:44.28 that had stood since 2012, but it was also the third dual-meet record in the event in just four weeks of races so far and far ahead of the 1:44.97 put up against Mary Washington. The time was also the ninth-fastest ever in school history.
Howard also claimed a school record to her credit, in one of the four special "throw-back" events that W&M was swimming for the first time in 31 years (not counting relay lead-offs or en-route splits). She won the 50 fly in 25.03 seconds, bettering the previous mark of 25.04 set by
Ustjanauskas at last year's CAA Championships. Howard also finished second overall in the 100 fly, stopping the clock in 56.48 seconds. In the 100 IM, all four of the Tribe's swimmers came in under the record-time of 1:01.99 set by
Kathy Welch '85 back in 1983, led by sophomore
Allie Christy's (Williamsburg, Va.) third-place and school-record time of 1:00.43.
The Tribe also had two more individual winners on the night, in Valls and sophomore
Jaimie Miller (Houston, Texas). Valls won the 50 breast in 29.81 seconds, while Miller had a busy evening with a win in the 100 free. She went 52.08 for that win, which came after she was third in the 50 back and second in the 50 free. Sophomore
Selina Fuller (Henrico, Va.) was runner-up in the 200 free in 1:55.22, and freshman
Jess Crowley (Acton, Mass.) was second to the wall in the 100 breast, timing 1:07.34. W&M finished the night with one last silver medal, as the team of Klockner, Howard, Miller, and freshman
Abby Mack (Wayne, Pa.) combined to time 1:35.08 in the 200 free relay.
William and Mary returns to the pool Saturday morning, taking on Richmond at 11 a.m. at the Rec Center
