WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior Anna Madden netted a pair of goals less than 10 minutes into the match, and the Tribe women's soccer team cruised to a 3-1 victory over Delaware on Friday night at Martin Family Stadium. Senior Emory Camper added the third goal in the second half, while freshman Rachel Moore added a pair of assists in the Green and Gold's fourth straight Colonial Athletic Association victory. The Tribe improves to 10-2-1, 4-1-0 in the CAA, while the Blue Hens fall to 6-6-1, 2-1-1 in league action.
W&M wasted little time settling into its offense rhythm and scored the match's first marker just two minutes into the game. Seconds into the match Camper had her shot blocked out of bounds. On the ensuing throw-in she found Moore, who fired a shot that was saved. However, the rebound found Madden, who cleaned up the mess and scored. The senior's third goal of the season gave the Green and Gold a 1-0 lead.
The Tribe doubled its lead in the ninth minute. Senior Aly Shaughnessy started the offense and sent a pass to Camper, who found Madden. Madden drove just outside of the box and volleyed a shot into the back of the net. The Silver Spring, Maryland native's second goal of the night moved the W&M lead 2-0.
Delaware got one back in the 47th minute of the match. Natalie Zelenky sent a pass to the left corner of the box that found Rachel Vaccaro. Varrco cleared some space and launched a shot into the top right corner of the net. Her second goal of the season cut the Tribe lead to 2-1.
The Green and Gold missed three chances to regain its two-goal advantage in the ensuing moments. Freshman Haley Kent charged just outside the middle of the box and uncorked a shot on frame. However, Delaware goalkeeper Kaliyn Rekos was there for the save in the 69th minute. Just three minutes later, the Tribe had a pair of chances. The first came when when Shaughnessy redirected junior Leci Irvin's cross off of the crossbar. The rebound bounced right to junior Nicole Baxter, but Rekos was able to recover and make the stop.
For the second time in the match, W&M extended its lead to a pair of goals in the 72nd minute. Moore sent Camper free into the box with a pass over a Delaware defender. Camper charged a few steps and rocketed her shot into the lower right of the goal. Her sixth of the season gave the Tribe a 3-1 advantage.
W&M controlled the pace of play for a good majority of the match. The Tribe finished the night with 21-7 advantage in shots including a 9-3 difference in shot's on goal. Moore finished the match with a game-high four shots, putting two on target.
Despite the goal, junior goalkeeper Caroline Casey made three saves on the evening. She picked up her 10th victory of the season for the Tribe. Her goals-against-average raised just a hair to 0.91.
Madden's multi-goal output was the fourth time a Tribe player found the back of the night twice in a game. She joins Shaughnessy and junior Samanatha Cordum (twice) as the player's to accomplish that feat. It was the first multi-goal game of Madden's career.
The College continues its final regular season home stand when they welcome Drexel to Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Sunday, Oct. 12. Kickoff for the match is set for 2 p.m.
