CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Katie Johnston's 71st minute goal lifted the William and Mary women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against Seton Hall on Friday night. The match was the first game of the Virginia Soccer Nike Classic in Charlottesville, Va.
The Tribe improves to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Pirates drop to 1-3-1 on the campaign.
Seton Hall started the match on the attack, firing the game's first shot. In the fifth minute Kaitlyn Ritter fired towards the target, but her shot sailed wide of the cage.
William and Mary responded just a minute later with its first shot. Off a corner kick from senior Dani Rutter, junior Emory Camper was able to send a header towards the goal, but it missed wide. The Tribe threatened again In the 20th minute, Rutter fired a shot on frame, but Seton Hall's Jennifer Pettigrew was there for the save.
Both teams would settle in and play to a scoreless tie in the first half. However, William and Mary did hold a slight advantage in shots at 3-2.
Johnston found the game-winner in the 71st minute. Off of a short corner, Rutter played the ball off for Camper on the left side. Camper sent a cross that Johnston was able to head into the back of the net, putting the Tribe up 1-0. The tally was the first career goal for Johnston and the first assist of the season for both Camper and Rutter.
W&M held the 1-0 advantage for the final 19 minutes of the match. Seton Hall did fire the game's last three shots, but none of them were on frame. The Pirates held a 10-7 advantage in shots, but the Tribe held a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Sophomore Caroline Casey was credited with her second straight shutout. It was the ninth shutout of her young William and Mary career. The Tribe has not allowed a goal in 255 minutes, dating back to the first half of the George Mason match (8/25).
The Green and Gold returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 8 and will conclude the Virginia Soccer Nike Classic against Rutgers. Kickoff is set for noon.
