The William and Mary volleyball team got back in the win column Tuesday night, shutting out Norfolk State 3-0 at Kaplan Arena. The Tribe improves to 4-7 on the year, while the Spartans fell to the same mark.
Box ScoreLeading the way for W&M was sophomore
Dessi Koleva (Torrance, Calif.), who recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs while hitting .324. Koleva also had a pair of blocks and two service aces, one of three Tribe players to reach that mark. Classmate
Carolyn Albright (Raleigh, N.C.) had a match-high five blocks, and redshirt-junior
Monika Stanciauskas (Wheaton, Ill.) added another three stops, two of them solo efforts. Junior
Liz Brown (Ellicott City, Md.) had 10 kills on a .308 attack to go with two more blocks, and sophomore
Mallory Brickerd (Ashburn, Va.) had six kills.
Also of note, seniors
Devin Andrews-Lyssy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and
Celine Alasomuka (Centreville, Va.) each reached double-digit digs, Andrews-Lyssy with 13 and two aces while Alasomuka had 11 digs and one ace. Freshman
Paige Lucas (Asheboro, N.C.) had an impressive 35 assists to go with four digs, and redshirt-freshman
Jenna Strange (Leesburg, Va.) scored her first collegiate points with a pair of service aces.
W&M took the first set, 25-21, using a simple, workmanlike approach that allowed no big runs for either team. Lucas directed the offense very well, collecting 15 of her assists in the frame, and the Tribe hit .224 with four kills each from Koleva and Brown. The second set was also close late, with W&M holding a slim 17-16 lead . A kill by Brickerd got a sideout for the Tribe, and
Jenna Strange subbed in as the home team scored eight of the final 10 points en route to a 25-18 win. The run included both of Strange's service aces, and was capped by back-to-back blocks, the first a collaboration between Albright and Brickerd, and the winner from Albright and Koleva. Koleva had six kills in the stanza on an impressive .545 percentage, and W&M hit .355 as a team with 14 kills.
In the third set, the Spartans again kept it close until late, and forced a Tribe timeout when they took a 14-12 lead on a service ace. The quick break was just W&M needed, as they went on to score 13 of the final 15 points, including six straight at one point. The run was started by a block from Brown and Albright, and Alasomuka served through the big run. The match came to an end with a 25-16 Tribe victory after three missed attacks by Norfolk State and the final ace from Koleva.
William and Mary heads back out on the road after the short home-break, playing this weekend in Charlottesville at the Jefferson Cup Invitational. The Tribe will face Columbia Friday night, before playing Seton Hall and Virginia Saturday.
