The William and Mary women's golf team placed a program-record four athletes on this year's All-American Scholars list, which was released by the Women's Golf Coaches Association on Monday afternoon. This is the first time that the Tribe has ever had more than one athlete selected to the team, which requires golfers to have participated in more than 50% of the season for their squad as well as carry an overall GPA of over 3.50. Total, teams from the Colonial Athletic Association had 18 athletes honored, with Xavier (5), W&M, and Dayton (4) all having multiple winners.
Both members of the Tribe's senior class were named to the team, with
Betsy Birchall '13 earning her third consecutive award and
Katy Hutcherson '13 collecting her first award. Birchall led W&M with a 79.95 average this season, and recorded a season-best finish of 13th at the CAA Championships. The neuroscience major graduated in May ranked third in school history with a career-average of 78.47 strokes per round, and fifth with 2,027 wins. She also holds or shares the school records for best round (-3), two rounds (-1), and three rounds (+1). Hutcherson was limited by injury to just the fall season, but in those nine rounds shot 80.11, good for second on the squad. She finished 17th at the Towson Invitational, and set career-best marks for a single round, 36-holes, and 54-holes while also recording the best winning percentage (.562) and stroke average of her abbreviated career.
Also earning their first accolades were
Anna McMullen (Monroe, La.) and
Alessandra Liu (Cynwyd, Pa.). A rising junior, McMullen averaged 82.47 strokes last year while participating in six tournaments, including the CAA Championships. Her best finish came at Kingsmill in the C&F Bank Intercollegiate, where she tied for 21st overall. Liu was third overall in 2012-13, and is the top returning golfer, after averaging 80.55 strokes per round and finishing in the top-10 at two tournaments. She was seventh at the CAA Championships, and also seventh at the Towson Invitational.
