William and Mary's
Jeremy Wells '13 was named the Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Wednesday by the Colonial Athletic Association, becoming the first Tribe men's golfer ever to win the award. Wells is the fifth W&M athlete to win Scholar-Athlete honors in 2012-13, joining
Mallory Schaffer '13 (women's soccer),
Alex McGrath '13 (men's cross country and men's track and field),
Kyle Gaillard (Huntersville, N.C.) (men's basketball), and
Andrew Strait (Henrico, Va.) (men's swimming and diving). The Tribe's six total awards so far this year matches the program's best-ever (2003-04), and is the fifth year in the 11-year history of the Scholar-Athlete program that W&M has collected five or more awards.
Wells, who graduated in May with a degree in marketing, led the Tribe to a third-place finish at the CAA Championships this year. His season average of 72.81 strokes per round was the second-best ever for W&M, and he became just the second athlete ever to record more than 600 wins in three consecutive seasons. Wells earned a spot on the all-tournament team with his individual third-place effort at CAAs, and was also voted first-team All-CAA and second-team All-State at the conclusion of the spring. At the Towson Invitational, he earned his first collegiate medal, and led W&M to its first team title since 2005.
As an individual sport Scholar-Athlete, Wells now advances to the ballot for the conference's overall Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A Tribe athlete has won the award five times, including each of the past two years.
