HARRISONBURG, Va. – After posting its third highest single-season win total in school history, which included a school record 17 conference wins, six members of the William and Mary baseball team earned Colonial Athletic Association All-League distinctions on Tuesday night from the league's annual awards banquet. Senior RHP John Farrell earned first-team honors, while junior second baseman Ryan Lindemuth and senior LHP Matt Wainman took home second-team accolades. Sophomore first baseman Michael Katz and classmate LHP Jason Inghram were third-team recipients, while freshman catcher Ryan Hissey was tabbed to the all-rookie squad. Additionally, W&M head coach Jamie Pinzino was honored as the CAA Co-Coach of the Year.
Pinzino becomes the first W&M head coach to garner Coach of the Year distinctions since Jim Farr earned the honor in 1993. In his first season at the helm of the Tribe program, Pinzino guided the Green and Gold to a 35-20 overall record, which is the third highest single season win total in school history. Additionally, W&M won a school record 17 conference games, as its second place finish in the CAA is its highest regular season finish in school history.
Senior RHP John Farrell becomes the sixth W&M pitcher to earn All-CAA First-Team honors as he finished the year with a record of 10-2 and an ERA of 2.42. The Andover, Mass., native is the first hurler in school history to post 10 wins in a season since Rosy Waugh accomplished the feat in 1938. Farrell finished the regular season tied for the conference lead in wins, while his ERA ranked second.
Junior second baseman Ryan Lindemuth and senior LHP Matt Wainman headlined the Tribe's second-team honorees. In 2013, Lindemuth posted an average of .341, which included 35 RBIs and 50 runs scored. The Burke, Va., native started all 55 games this spring as his 75 hits tied for fourth most in the CAA. Wainman garners second-team distinctions after cementing himself as the Tribe's closer halfway through the season. The Woodbridge, Va., native accounted for all seven of his saves during league action this year as the total tied for most in the conference.
Sophomore's Michael Katz and Jason Inghram represented the Green and Gold on the league's third-team. This season, Katz led the Tribe with a batting average of .367, which included team highs in RBIs (41), slugging percentage (.539), doubles (20) and total bases (97). The Falls Church, Va., native registered 19 multi-hit and 10 multi–RBI contests this spring as he earns all-conference distinctions for the second consecutive season. Inghram, who posted a season record of 8-5 and an ERA of 2.53, was dominant in CAA action. In nine league starts, the southpaw posted a record of 6-3 on an ERA of 1.89. He held the opposition bats in the CAA to an average of .204 as he fanned 68 batters in 62.0 innings of work. Earlier this season the Chesapeake, Va., native carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning in the series finale against George Mason before the Patriots broke up the program's fourth no-hit bit on a one-out single in the top of the ninth.
After earning rookie of the week accolades on four occasions this season, it was only fitting that freshman catcher Ryan Hissey earned a spot on the CAA All-Rookie Team. In his first year wearing the Green and Gold, Hissey started 54-of-55 games behind the plate. The West Chester, Pa., native made his presence known in conference action as he batted .309 with 14 RBIs, 16 runs scored and four doubles.
W&M's six all-league selections runs the Tribe's all-time total of CAA honorees to 64 as this season's total is the most since the conference added third-team distinctions in 2008.
Tribe baseball opens play in the 2013 CAA Tournament on Thursday, May 23, at 6:00 p.m. from Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. The Green and Gold will face the winner of Wednesday's contest between No.3 seed Delaware and No.6 seed James Madison.
