WILMINGTON, N.C. – The William and Mary baseball team dropped its series finale at UNCW, 11-4 on Saturday afternoon at Brooks Field. Despite jumping out to a 2-1 advantage, UNCW rallied for the victory as it improved its overall record to 36-16 and Colonial Athletic Association ledger to 17-6. The setback drops the Tribe to 32-19 on the season and 15-9 in league action.
At the plate, senior shortstop Ryan Williams paced the effort with two RBIs on one hit, while junior shortstop Willie Shaw recorded a run batted in to go along with a hit and a run scored. Freshman left fielder Jonathan Sarty went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while senior designated hitter Jackson Shaver finished the contest with two hits and a run scored. Freshman catcher Ryan Hissey carded a hit and a run scored, while senior right fielder Derek Lowe connected on two hits in three at bats.
Sophomore LHP Jason Inghram (7-5) took the loss after allowing four earned funs in 5.1 innings of work. In relief action, junior RHP John Sheehan, senior LHP Matt Wainman and freshman RHP Mitchell Aker all made appearances.
After the Seahawks jumped out to a 1-0 advantage, the Green and Gold responded in the top of the second with a pair of runs as it controlled a 2-1 lead. Williams plated Shaver and Sarty with a double to center field as W&M took an early 2-1 advantage.
UNCW countered with runs in the next four innings as it took a 5-2 margin as play entered the top half of the eighth. The Tribe responded in the top half with two runs as it cut the Seahawks' lead to 5-4. Shaw led the inning off with a solo home run over the left field wall, which was his fourth of the season as W&M got to within 5-3. The Green and Gold got to within one, 5-4, after Sarty laced a double down the left field chalk, which plated Hissey from first base. Hissey reach base after an infield single to the UNCW shortstop.
Feeling a swing in momentum the Seahawks responded and put the contest out of reach with six runs in the bottom of the eighth, which made the final tally 11-4.
