WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary baseball team fell to Rutgers, 5-3, in ten innings on Saturday
evening at Plumeri Park. The Tribe, who
trailed 3-2 as played entered the ninth inning, tied the affair courtesy of freshman
pinch-hitter Jonathan Sarty's two-out RBI single through the left side. However, Rutgers responded with two runs in
the top half of the tenth en route to the win.
The setback drops W&M to 9-5 overall, while Rutgers improves to 3-8
on the season.
At the plate, sophomore third baseman Michael Katz led the
way with two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Senior first baseman Kevin Nutter finished the contest with a hit and a
run batted in, while senior designated hitter Jackson Shaver and freshman catcher
Ryan Hissey each scored a run. Senior
center fielder Ryan Brown and junior second baseman Ryan Lindemuth finished the
game with a hit each.
Senior RHP John Farrell (3-0) earned the no decision as the
Andover, Mass., native saw 7.2 innings of action, allowing just two earned
runs, while striking out six and allowing no walks. Junior RHP John Sheehan took the loss (1-1)
in 1.2 innings of relief, while freshman Mitchell Aker retired two batters in
the tenth.
The Scarlet Knights were the first to get on the scoreboard
as it plated an unearned run in the top half of the second.
W&M tied the affair at 1-1 with a run in the bottom half
of the fifth. Shaver led off the frame
by reaching second base on a throwing error by the Rutgers third baseman. He later advanced to third after Brown's
sacrifice bunt. With one out and Shaver
on third, Nutter connected on a fly ball to right field, that sailed foul, but
was played by RU's right fielder in which Shaver was able to tag home.
In the top of the sixth, RU's senior right fielder Steve
Zavala's two-run home run over the right field fence gave the Scarlet Knights a
3-1 advantage.
Answering back, the Green and Gold countered in the bottom
half. With one out and with one swing of
the bat, Katz cut the deficit to 3-2 as he blasted an offering over the left
field wall. The home run is the first of
the 2013 season for the Falls Church, Va., native.
As played entered the bottom of the ninth, the Tribe was
still trailing, 3-2. Hissey led of the
inning by reaching first on an error by the third baseman. The West Chester, Pa., native later advanced
to third following consecutive groundouts.
For the second consecutive night and in his only at bat, freshman
pinch-hitter Jonathan Sarty delivered.
This time, Sarty's two-out single that raced into left field pushed
across Hissey as W&M tied the tilt, 3-3.
In the top half of the tenth and with one out, the Scarlet
Knights loaded the bases. After retiring
the second out of the inning, W&M was on the verge of escaping the frame
without a blemish. However, with two
outs and the bases still loaded, the Green and Gold walked in the go ahead run. The Scarlet Knights tacked on an insurance
run as senior first baseman Bill Hoermann's single through the left side plated
RU's fifth run of the game.
The series concludes tomorrow with the first pitch from
Plumeri Park slated for 1 p.m. Fans can
