WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -
The William and Mary baseball team built a smothering 7-0 lead after three
innings of play as it cruised past the Penn Quakers, 19-5, in its series finale
on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park. Offensively, the Green and Gold produced
21 hits, which was highlighted by a 10-run fifth inning. The victory improves the Tribe's record to
7-4 overall, while the setback drops Penn to 1-3 on the season.
Senior LHP Matt Wainman (1-1) was impressive as the
Woodbridge, Va., native earned his first victory of the 2013 season. In 6.0 innings of work, Wainman allowed just
three hits and two unearned runs, while fanning two Quakers in 25 batters
faced. In relief appearances, freshmen Aaron Fernandez and Joseph Gaouette closed out the
contest in a combined three innings of work.
At the plate, senior center fielder Ryan Brown led the way
with a 3-for-4 performance, which included four RBIs and two runs scored. Junior left fielder Willie Shaw recorded
three RBIs and a run scored in a 2-for-5 outing, while senior designated hitter
Jackson Shaver continued to impress with two hits, two RBIs and two runs
scored. Sophomore Michael Katz finished
the afternoon with four hits and two runs batted in, while junior second
baseman Ryan Lindemuth went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. At the top of the order, senior leadoff man
Kevin Nutter crossed the plate three times to go along with two hits and a run
batted in. For the day, nine W&M
players recorded hits, while eight individuals tallied runs batted in.
After Wainman retired the Quakers in order to start the
contest, the Tribe got on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom half of
the opening frame. With no outs and the
bases loaded, Nutter scored on a groundout double play as the Tribe went ahead
early, 1-0.
W&M took control of the tilt with five runs in
the second as it extended its advantage to 6-0.
The highlight of the frame came on Brown's single to left field, which
pushed across Shaver and senior Ryan Williams for W&M's second and third runs of the affair.
The Tribe went ahead 7-0 in the third as senior right fielder Derek
Lowe's fly out to right field was deep enough to plate freshman catcher Ryan
Hissey from third base.
The Green and Gold put the contest out of reach as it plated
10 runs, all on two-outs, in the bottom half of the fifth. Nutter's double to right center field, which
drove in Williams, fueled the onslaught, while Brown's single to right field drove in Lowe for the Tribe's tenth run of the inning.
Penn got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the top
half of the sixth after back-to-back singles from Austin Bossart and Ryan Deitrich
each plated a runner. After the Tribe
tacked two runs in the sixth, courtesy of RBI at bats from Shaw and Shaver, the
Quakers put up three additional runs before Gaouette retired Penn in order in
the ninth.
