BOSTON, Mass. – In his third complete-game effort of the season, senior RHP
John Farrell pitched a shutout and W&M tacked on the afternoon's only score in the sixth inning as it defeated Northeastern, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Friedman Diamond. The Tribe, who has now posted five consecutive victories, improves to 15-8 overall and 4-1 in CAA action, while the Huskies fall to 10-10 on the season and 2-6 in league action.
In nine innings of work, Farrell (5-0) scattered just four hits and posted seven strikeouts en route to his league tying fifth win of the season. Pitching just 27 miles south of his hometown (Andover, Mass.), Farrell also lowered his ERA to 1.51, which is also tops in the CAA. Offensively, senior center fielder
Ryan Brown drove in what proved to be the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the sixth. Senior right fielder
Derek Lowe registered a hit and scored the go-ahead run, while junior third baseman
Willie Shaw and freshman left fielder
Jonathan Sarty each tallied a hit.
After five scoreless innings of play, the Tribe got on the scoreboard with a run in the top half of the sixth. Lowe led the inning off with a single up the middle and advanced to second following junior second baseman
Ryan Lindemuth's groundout to second. Brown proceeded to plate the local Sudbury, Mass., native from second with an infield single to the NU shortstop as W&M grabbed a 1-0 advantage.
In a series where runs have come at a premium, Northeastern's best chance to score came in the bottom half of the seventh. With one out and the Tribe controlling a 1-0 lead, Northeastern was threatening as it had a runner stationed on third. In an attempt to tag from third, on second baseman Josh Treff's fly out to right filed, center fielder Connor Lyons was thrown out at home on Lowe's frozen rope to freshman catcher
Ryan Hissey as the Tribe ended the threat with an inning ending double play.
Down to their last three outs in the bottom of the ninth, Farrell retired the Huskies in order, all on groundouts, as the Green and Gold captured the series with the 1-0 victory.
