WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (March 2, 2013) - The
William and Mary baseball team had its five-game winning streak snapped with a
10-4 loss against Penn in the second game of a doubleheader at Plumeri Park on
Saturday afternoon.
W&M (6-4)
was led by freshman catcher Ryan Hissey, who went 2-for-4 with a run scored and
a RBI, while senior designated hitter Jackson Shaver went 1-for-2 with a run
scored.
Penn's (1-2)
RHP Dan Gautieri (1-0) earned the victory, LHP Ronnie Glenn earned his first
save of the season. W&M's sophomore LHP Jason Inghram (1-2) took the loss.
Penn jumped
out to an early lead with a run in the top of the first when catcher Austin
Bossart drove in right fielder Ryan Deitrich with a two-out double to deep
right center.
The Quakers
extended their lead to 2-0 with another run in the top of the third. Third
baseman Rick Brebner led off the frame with a double to right and later scored
on a groundout by Bossart.
W&M
responded with three runs in the bottom of half of the third frame to go ahead,
3-2. After Hissey and Shaver led off the frame with back-to-back singles, both
runners scored when senior right fielder Derek Lowe reached on a throwing error
by Penn's second baseman. Sophomore third baseman Michael Katz later plated
Lowe with a two-out single to left.
Penn retook
the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Shortstop Mitch Montaldo led off
with a single through the left side, and centerfielder Gary Tesch followed with
another single two batters later to put runners on the corners. After Montaldo
scored on a double steal, second baseman Michael Vilardo plated another run
with a RBI single to left. Deitrich brought in the final run of the inning with
a sacrifice fly to center.
W&M got a
run back in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out RBI double to center by
Hissey, but Penn outscored the Tribe 5-0 in the final three innings.
The teams will
close out the series when they play on Sunday at 1 p.m.
