Tribe Baseball Downs Penn in Game One of Doubleheader, 8-2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary baseball team scored three runs in the opening inning of play as it cruised past Penn, 8-2, in game one (7 innings) of its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park.  The victory extends W&M's winning-streak to five and overall record to 6-3, while the Quakers fall to 0-2 on the season.

Senior RHP John Farrell (3-0) earned the victory after surrendering just two earned runs on six hits, while posting five strikeouts in all seven innings of work.

At the plate, freshman catcher Ryan Hissey went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.  The West Chester, Pa., native connected on his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the sixth as the Tribe has now recorded three home runs on the season.  Senior shortstop Ryan Williams drove in two runs and scored a pair of runs, while senior designated Jackson Shaver tallied an RBI.  Sophomore third baseman Michael Katz finished the afternoon with an RBI, a run scored and a hit.

The Green and Gold plated a trio of runs in the opening frame as it raced out to the early advantage.  With two outs, Katz's single to center field pushed across junior second baseman Ryan Lindemuth for the Tribe's first run of the afternoon.  Shaw followed Katz with another single through the middle of the infield and with runners on first and second, Williams' single to left field drove in Katz and Shaw as the Tribe commanded the three-run advantage after an inning of play.

Penn trimmed the deficit to a run, 3-2, after it pushed across a pair of runs in the top half of the third.  After the Quakers plated its first run of the contest, Michael Vilardo's two-out double to left field drove in Connor Betbeze for the Quakers' second run of the affair.

W&M responded in the bottom half with two runs as it extended its lead to 5-2.  Williams got things going as the Fairfax, Va., native reached base after being hit by Penn's RHP Connor Cuff.  Hissey followed with a double to right field, which plated Williams from first base.  Shaver pushed across W&M's fifth run of the day after the Williamsburg, Va., native belted a single to center field, which plated Hissey.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tribe tacked on another run as Lindemuth's single to left field eventually plated senior center fielder Ryan Brown after an error on the Penn left fielder.

The Tribe added two insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth.  With Williams on first, who reached base after being hit by another pitch, Hissey's two-run home run over the right field fence gave the Green and Gold the prevailing 8-2 margin.

Tribe baseball returns to action this afternoon at approximately 3:00 p.m. as it takes on Penn in game two of its doubleheader.  Fans can follow the action online at TribeAthletics.com with live audio and stats.
