WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The
William and Mary baseball team defeated Siena, 4-2, in game one of its Sunday
doubleheader this morning at Plumeri Park.
W&M plated two runs in the first and second innings as it captured
the series over the Saints. The victory
improves the Tribe's record to 3-3 on the season, while the setback drops Siena
to 1-4 overall.
Senior RHP John Farrell (2-0) registered the win after the
Andover, Mass., native went the distance as he allowed two earned runs on nine
hits, while tallying four strikeouts.
At the plate, senior first baseman Kevin Nutter went 2-for-4
with an RBI and a run scored, while senior center fielder Ryan Brown recorded
two hits and a run batted in. Junior
Willie Shaw finished the morning going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while senior Ryan
Williams also tallied an RBI.
The Tribe got off to a fast start on Sunday morning as it
plated two runs in the opening frame.
With one out and the bases loaded, Shaw drew a base-on-balls, which
pushed across Nutter for W&M's first run of the contest. Williams proceeded to give the Tribe a 2-0
advantage, as his sacrifice fly out to center field was deep enough to plate a
tagging Ryan Lindemuth from third base.
In the bottom of the second, the Green and Gold extended its
margin to 4-0 after a pair of base hits.
Freshman designated hitter Brian Lee led off the inning with a blistering double that reached the right
gap. He later scored on Nutter's single
to right center field, which gave W&M the three-run lead. With one out and senior right fielder Derek Lowe on third, who reached
base on a bunt single, Brown's double to left center field plated the Sudbury,
Mass., native and after two innings of play the Tribe commanded a 4-0 lead.
Siena got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, as
Larry Balkwill's fly out to left field was deep enough to plate Andres Ortiz
from third.
As play entered the top of the ninth, W&M controlled a
4-1 advantage. However, Siena got on the
scoreboard when Brian Fay's two-out double to right center field pushed across John Rooney
for the Saints' second run of the contest.
Siena's rally would be short-lived as Farrell retired the next batter, which
preserved the Tribe's 4-2 win.
The series concludes this afternoon with game three slated
to start at approximately 1:45 p.m. Fans
