Complete Results

60m Dash
W&M only had two men competing in the 60m dash, but that was all that was needed as both the school and the freshman record were topped.  Sophomore Bob Smutsky (Dillsburg, Pa..) tied the school record of 7.14 seconds, set by Justin Benabdallah '06 in his senior year, and placed 22nd overall.  Freshman Alex Hedrick (Falls Church, Va.), competing in one of four events on the day, smashed the freshman record with his 7.32 seconds.  Hedrick now ranks tied for fifth all-time at W&M in the event.

Shot Put
The Tribe's IC4A qualifier came in the shot put, where sophomore Taylor Frenia (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a career-best indoor put of 15.98 meters (52-5.25) to win the event.  Frenia now ranks 10th all-time at W&M indoors.  Redshirt-sophomore Brian Waterfield (Chesapeake, Va.) also had an indoor-best, putting the shot 15.61m (51-2.75) for second place overall and the No. 13 entry in school history.

Weight Throw
The duo of bombardiers were also the top two collegiate performers in the weight throw, finishing second and third overall behind a professional thrower.  Waterfield took the lead in this one with a mammoth career-best toss of 16.40m (53-9.75).  He improved to eighth all-time among throwers at W&M with the effort.  For his part, Frenia had the second-best throw of his career, taking third overall at 15.90m (52-2).

5,000m Run
Befitting its status as a distance powerhouse, the Tribe swept the top four spots in the 5,000m run to start the day, before coming back to go 1-6 in the 3,000m in the evening.  First in the early race, sophomore Ryan Gousse (Apopka, Fla.) ran a career-best 14:46.45 for the win, coming in three seconds clear of his teammates.  Rad Gunzenhauser (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was second in 14:49.27, edging out David Barney (Lynchburg, Va.) by .02 seconds, and freshman Trevor Sleight (Asheville, N.C.) hit 15:00.00 on the nose for fourth place.

3,000m Run
That later 3,000m race was won by Gunzenhauser, who came back with a tough 8:41.61 for the victory.  Freshmen followed him across the line like ducklings, with Faris Sakallah (Chantilly, Va.) second in 8:44.73 and Nick Tyrey (Raleigh, N.C.) third in 8:46.29.  Rookie Reider Strehler (Moseley, Va.) ran 8:48.33 in his Tribe debut for fourth place, and junior Ian MacFawn (LaVale, Md.) was fifth with a time of 8:52.74.  Freshman Kurtis Steck (Williamsburg, Va.) finished the sweep in sixth place, crossing the line in 8:58.09.

Mile Run
Sophomore Ricky Cappetta (Stafford, Va.) was third overall in the mile run with his career-bst 4:30.96, taking the top honors among Division I competitors for 10 more team points.

800m Run
The 800m run was another points bonanza for the Tribe, with 26 points being cashed in.  Redshirt-junior Mark Moran (McLean, Va.) was third overall in 2:01.10 for eight points, and Cappetta took fourth in 2:02.60.  Just behind him was freshman Michael Wilkens (Woodbury, N.Y.), fifth with a time of 2:02.67, and sixth place went to another rookie, Matt Pittard (Lynchburg, Va.), in 2:04.71.  Sophomore Jomar Aryee (Hillside, N.J.) scored the final three points with his ninth-place 2:06.25.

Pole Vault
In the pole vault, redshirt-freshman Derek O'Connell (Virginia Beach, Va.) topped the bar at 4.35m (14-3.25) for third place overall and six team points.  Sophomore Greg Gallagher (Elmsford, N.Y.) and Hedrick both cleared 4.05m (13-3.5), with Gallagher being judged fifth and Hedrick tied for eighth on the basis of misses.

High Jump
Redshirt-freshman Dominic Burkett (Chesapeake, Va.) made his Tribe debut in the high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 1.80m (5-10.75) to tie for ninth place overall.  The performance earned him 5.5 points in the team standings.

Long Jump
Burkett also competed in the long jump alongside Smutsky and Hedrick.  Burkett leapt 5.96m (19-6.75) to score four points, with Hedrick providing three at 5.77m (18-11.25) and Smutsky a final two at 5.73m (18-9.75).

4x400m Relay
The final event of the day was the 4x400m relay, where the Tribe picked up five points with its 10th-place performance.  The quartet of Aryee, Wilkens, Pittard, and Hedrick carried the baton eight laps in 3:31.16.

Today's meet was the final outing of the semester for William and Mary, which now turns its attention to final exams.  The next competition for the Green and Gold will come on Jan. 17-18, at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
