BOSTON, Mass. – The William and Mary women's soccer team battled Northeastern to a scoreless tie in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon.
William and Mary concludes the regular season at 8-2-6, 5-1-2 in CAA play, while the Huskies finish the season 5-8-4, 5-2-1.
The Huskies had the first chance of the match just five minutes in. Morgan Hilby put a shot on frame, but sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Casey was there for the stop. Hilby put another shot on goal in the 45th minute and again Casey was there for the stop.
William and Mary had just one shot in the first stanza. It came from junior Aly Shaughnessy, but she pushed it high.
The Tribe recorded the first chance of the second half in the 55th minute. Sophomore Leci Irvin drove the field and uncorked a shot that sailed wide. W&M put its first shot on goal in the 80th minute when sophomore Barbara Platenberg put a shot on target. However, Northeastern goalkeeper Paige Burnett recorded the save.
In the 86th minute, Northeastern had a good look. Haley Sinclar had a shot that hit off of the post, and went out of bounds. In the 88th minute, Hanna Terry put a shot on frame, but again Casey stood strong.
In the first overtime period both teams had a chances to find the game-winner. Northeastern had a pair of shots from Hannah O'Donnell and Skylar LeBlanc go wide. The Tribe's chance came on a shot from Irvin, and was turned away by Burnett.
The second overtime period was a similar story. This time William and Mary had the first chance, when junior Emory Camper pushed her shot wide. The Huskies chance came on a shot from Carina Deandreis, but Casey recorded the final save of the match.
Casey finished the match recording four saves for W&M. The shutout was her sixth of the season. On the offensive side of the ball, Camper and Irvin finished with a team-high two shots for the Tribe.
The result, earned the Tribe the No. 2 seed and a bye in the CAA Tournament. The event will be hosted by James Madison and will take place on the weekend of Nov. 8-10.
William and Mary concludes the regular season with a record of 8-2-6 and has already clinched its 32nd straight winning season. The Tribe plays again in the CAA Semifinals on Nov. 8. Time and opponent are yet to be determined.
