WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William and Mary women's soccer team used four-second half goals to cruise to a, 5-1, Colonial Athletic Association victory against the College of Charleston on Friday night.
William and Mary, which is unbeaten in its last 12 matches, has won five straight matches and improved to 8-1-4, 5-0-0 in CAA play, while the College of Charleston fell to 2-12-0, 0-5-0.
The Tribe got on the scoreboard first in 31st minute. Sophomore Barbara Platenberg fired a shot on target that was saved by Charleston goalkeeper Lauren Killian. However, the rebound landed on the foot of senior Dani Rutter, who scored her third goal of the season. The tally, which was assisted by Platenberg, gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead.
W&M wasted little time in the second half getting on the board, scoring in the 50th minute. Sophomore Katie Johnston tried to send a cross into the box, but the ball deflected off of a defender into the goal, resulting in an own goal.
In the 57th minute, William and Mary added its third goal of the night. Rutter sent a cross into the box that found sophomore Nicole Baxter. Baxter, then, launched the ball into the upper left corner of the net for her second goal of the season. Rutter's assist was the 20th of her career and moved her into a tie for 10th place all-time in career assists.
Just three minutes later the College struck again. Off of a turnover, Baxter collected a loose ball and dished a pass to junior Emory Camper. Camper, who was wide open, scored into the empty net, lifting the Tribe to a 4-0 advantage.
Camper wasn't done and added her second goal of the night in 69th minute. The Virginia Beach, Va. native received a pass from classmate Emily Fredrikson and beat the goalkeeper in a one-versus-one. The goal was Camper's team-leading ninth of the season.
Charleston was able to break the shutout in the 82nd minute of the match. Off of a free kick, the ball deflected to the top of the box and found Michaela Herrmann. Herrmann sent a volley into the top right of the goal for the lone goal of the night for the Cougars.
The Tribe, which controlled possession for a most of the night, held a 27-11 advantage in shots, including a 19-3 advantage in shots on goal. William and Mary's five goal outburst was the most goals the team had scored since Sept. 30, 2012. That night the Tribe defeated Towson, 5-0.
On Sunday, the William and Mary women's soccer program will honor its six seniors, Audrey Barry, Tara Connors, Lauren Gough, Ali Heck, Rutter, and Samantha Trail, for Senior Day. That ceremony will start at approximately 1:45 p.m.
The College concludes its regular season home schedule when they welcome UNCW to Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Sunday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
